Time to install front disc brake conversion kit

Hi everyone,

I am considering swapping my front brakes to disc brakes (currently power drum). Finding the drum brakes just take a little too long to stop than I would like when on the freeway or when having to make a sudden stop while cruising.

Lots of kits available for ~$500-$700, but I won't be able to install myself. Was wondering how many hours might go into the conversion? Trying to get a sense before calling my mechanic to see if ballpark is within my budget.

Thanks

I would think a good day's job as drum spindle anchor bolt boss, the top one on spindle, will have to be cut 0.610"?
This figure will be in the instructions.
Also, installer will have to shim caliper bracket for keeping it square to rotor.

Are you using a shop that has done a lot of brake retrofits and works on old Camaros regularly? If not, the job will probably take 2 times longer even with a decent mechanic.

Good point! Yes, guy I have been working with essentially only works on GM cars from the 60s and 70s. Every time I've been there I'd say there have been 10-15 Corvettes / Camaros / Novas etc, all generally looking great.

Thanks, knowing this talk to him, give him an idea of what you want out of the swap and ask what he recommends kit wise. At the same time without pressing him for exact numbers ask him for a ballpark figure.

On the garage floor with jack stands I removed a stock style power disc setup and replaced it with a manual 13" C5 disc kit including master cyl in a weekend. All machining of the hubs etc was done ahead of time and because my spindles were already for disc's there was no machining there. I think now I could do it in one day. Your shop 4-5 hrs maybe less would be my guess. Lots of things with old cars can get in the way adding hours to the job though.

I would get a kit that includes spindles. No machining
required and everything will work as designed. A lot
less guess work that way. A shop with the knowledge
and equipment should be able to knock it out in 4-5 hrs.
