Power steering gone

Haven't had any issues with the power steering in my '69 since yesterday. It was after some pretty wild fish-tailing (I get no traction now with my 4.11 gears). Checked the fluid level and it's fine. Is it pretty much a no brainer that the pump is bad?

Donít understand the punctuation there

Moderator edit:

Mike some how the character set wasn't set to American English. I deleted the cryptic characters and tried to follow your train of thought. Did you post from a phone or desktop?

Re: Power steering gone

OP

so does the PS still not work just under normal driving (read not "fish tailing")?

I have seen belts throw when people get all "Gas Monkey" on burnouts....but I assume you checked to see if your belt is still on....and tight

Re: Power steering gone

I would bring it up to temp and then see if you can lock the wheel to the left and hear the pump actually working, then slowly drive in a flat level area like a parking lot can she hold the tight circle or does it wonder away from the tight circle. Then try locking in the other direction. If it wonders out of the lock your not holding pressure and check the fluid level again, you might have a pinhole leak in one of the hoses. Also if you cant hear the pump change under load from idle as someone gently turns the wheel while parked then the belt is either slipping or the pump is bad.

God, no, I hate to say it, I didn't check the belt, and that in fact was the problem. Duh. In any case, I guess it's best to get a new belt.

Check the keyboard setting if it is iOS you can have multiple ones loaded and everything you hit the globe it cycles through them. Not sure what Android does. But until you find it I would avoid punctuation LOL

I prefer the Goodyear (I think now called Continental) Gatorback belts

Re: Power steering gone

you didn't say whether the belt was loose or came off.
if it came off, here is a little trick you can use to keep it on at any rpm

Yeah it came off, and I'm having a hard time keeping it on. I believe that I am tightening the belt when I rotate the pump assembly upwards, but maybe I'm not torquing it hard enough on it.:.. let's face it, i suck at this stuff, but I should at least be able to tighten a dam belt!

I will try not to use punctuation here. When I loosen one of the bolts holding the pulley assembly in place, I am able to rotate the thing upwards and it looks like I am tightening the belt in the process. Maybe I am not pushing hard enough on it?
