Spindle Bolt??

I'm assembling the front suspension and have new hardware and fasteners for everything except the stubby 5/8-18 x 7/8" bolt that goes through the backing plate and caliper bracket and threads into the spindle. I've checked all the suppliers, NPD, Classic, Rick's, Year One, etc......can't find it. Checked my assembly manual for the torque spec, can't find that either.

Any of you know where I can get some grade 8 replacements and how tight they should be?

Re: Spindle Bolt??

If there is nothing special about the bolt you could try Lowes or Tractor Supply.

Re: Spindle Bolt??

Didn't the OEM have grade 8 markings on the head? That bolt from Speedway is the Chinese version that comes with their spindles, the head thickness is reduced for some unknown reason, I don't trust unmarked Chinese bolts. A normal gr8 bolt with proper markings fits correctly.
Yes I realize I'm late to this discussion but those bolts are not good

The only reason someone would want insurance is if they want to pay someone elses bills or want someone else to pay their bills.

Re: Spindle Bolt??

The only issue with a grade 8 bolt from the hardware store is that the head is too thick and will interfere with the rotor.

You can special order them or do what I did. Trip to Ace, two short grade 8 bolts. Grind the head down for clearance.

I use them all the time, does not hit the rotors.

Then I have different spindles than you do. I ground them off, and one still rubbed just a bit. Had to remove it and grind some more.

Maybe because I was using modified drum brake spindles. I THOUGHT they were the same after removing the excess material from the drum brake spindles. Maybe not.

Re: Spindle Bolt??

Not a great pic, but this is an original 69 spindle assembly. The bolt in question is up at the top. The head is thinner than the two standard bolts below that bold to the steering arm.

Re: Spindle Bolt??

Clears with a little over an 1/8"
I use 5/8"-18X1" grade 8 bolts. Buy from any good supplier, not Chinese auto parts.
I would never use a cut up drum spindle or that Chinese reduced head unmarked bolt..
