Unhappy power steering lock up on acceleration

Hi, I recently change my steering box for a quick ratio AGR 12:1 and installed a new pump (BRG-800310) from summit racing. Pump pressure is 1,200-1,350 PSI with a 2.7-3.5 GPM flow rate. Is this pump good for this box?

I am having some issues when accelerating...the steering lock up mostly on turning left....very bizarre. the oil is at level no noise, the steering is smood from lock to lock when engine is idling or turned off while wheel are off the ground. also smood when driving or stationary on the ground from lock to lock. I have done almost everything I could think of for taking the air out....did it with a vaccum with 15-20. the belt is new and tight also.

do not know what to do anymore.....any help would be appreciated.
Luc.

Does this happen consistently when accelerating?

Check my web page for First Gen Camaro suspension info:

Re: power steering lock up on acceleration

Hi David, yes it does it all the time, about 1/8 of a turn to the left at acceleration about 3000 rpm and it does it, no problem returning strait or turning to the right. It is really scary it really lock up like something hit something, even tried to jack up the car at different heights to see if moving freely. It is all moving freely when not accelerating.....almost feel like trying without the belt to see if it does the same thing, but afraid to damage the box, would that do some damage?. Did the same thing with my old pump, first tried it stock then did the mod that is on your site for the pressure valve and drill out the orifice to .157.....was better but still locks, this is why I went with new pump to see if it would be different but same results. Also changed the return hose 3/8.

So I guest the big question is does trapped air do this? Have a hard time to believe the box is defect.....or the pump.
Appreciate your help.....because I am at the end of imagination here.....

Luc

Re: power steering lock up on acceleration

Is it possible the DS motor mount is broken and the steering shaft is binding as the engine lift under torque?

John might be on to something here. Any scratches on the steering shaft?

Re: power steering lock up on acceleration

Hi John, yes I did think of that too...motor mount are solid peace and do not move, but will check that for sure tonight just to make sure because like I said I am out of ideas. When driving I did try to put in neutral and rev the engine while giving and steered to the left but does not have the same effect.....sometime it does lock but not the same....real hard to simulate when you are on third gear and accelerate from apprx 1500 rpm to 3000 rpm and being on the converter for 5-10 sec....

thanks for the suggestion, will check that tonight. this is a long elimination process LOL.
I think will also check in gear (D) and step on the brake and rev a little bit...maybe to 3000rpm if I am able to and try to turn left.

Re: power steering lock up on acceleration

Just found the problem :-)
thanks to you guys......it was the bolt from the rag joint touching the heathers! when the engine was under load....
so happy I found it. It was driving me nuts for two weeks now. So I guest now is time for proper BB engine motor mount. I think the are a bit different than the SB and shift the engine to the right a bit for clearance.

Again thank you all for helping out.

Big block mounts will sit it over just a hair.
