Question rear axle bumpers

What is the difference between the 67' rear axle bumpers and the 68-69.

Question Re: rear axle bumpers

Maybe I will rephrase my question. Why were the 68' rear axle bumpers design changed from the 67' style?

I'm wondering because I have changed from a 67 mono leaf springs and rear to 68' multi leaf springs and rear.

68'
67'

Re: rear axle bumpers

The bumpers are to prevent the axle from crushing the frame rails when the axle bottoms out.

The design change was to change the vector pattern. The 67 pad will crush the rail, the 68 transfers the load to the vertical wall of the rail and not crush it. Compare the bolt hole location in the two pictures.

Re: rear axle bumpers

thanks for the reply Everett I think I will get the 68-69 bumpers installed.

Can anyone post a 68-69' pic so I can know where to install the bumper on my 67'.
Either a page from the assembly manual or a pic of your car would be great.

Re: rear axle bumpers

I will rephrase my question. Does the 68-69 axle bumpers go in the same location as the 67'?

Re: rear axle bumpers

They do end up in the same location, basically.

I'm working on my rear suspension. Here are a couple pictures of a 68. One with the bumper installed, one with it missing that shows the mounting holes.

Re: rear axle bumpers

If you have a 67, 68-9 bumpers won't fit unless you move the shocks to staggered. 67 had them both on the same side of the axle.

Re: rear axle bumpers

Hey, it only took 15 months to get that pic put up lol.

I took the 68' bumpers back and bought the 67's. I think because I wasn't getting alot of help on the subject,(everyone thought I must have been nuts) plus it was just way easier. I guess no one has done it before, and how many times will you be going 4x4ing to actually get the axle to hit the rail.

Hilrod,
If you could explain that a little more it would be appreciated.

Not to steal the post, but....

I bought a used right side bumper bracket and I'm not sure it if was altered or not. On mine, the rearward vertical edge is about 3/8 of an inch. There really is no forward vertical edge. That's what your photo appears to show. Is that correct? My question regards the forward edge only.

Thanks

Bob

Re: rear axle bumpers

Johnny,

The '67's mount horizonally flat and can crush the unibody's what I call the rearend's S/F sheetmetal.

Whereas the '68/'69's mount the rubber stop to a vertical L-shaped bracket w/ a channel that sandwiches the S/F sheetmetal and also mounts one bolt up higher to keep from damaging these thin S/F sheetmetal panels, imho is all....

Re: rear axle bumpers

Bob,

I'm not sure I understand your question. The installed bracket I showed is on the left side. I have no reason to think it's not original, or even that it's ever been off the car. If a different angle picture would help let me know...just takes a second to snap a photo.

Re: rear axle bumpers

Dave

Can you snap a picture of the RIGHT side from the front and rear as it would mount on the car?

Thanks

Bob

Re: rear axle bumpers

I don't have a bumper on the right side, so you won't see much there.

Some have mentioned that the 68/69 sandwich the frame. That not correct. It mounts to the outside of the frame rail.

Here is my right side from the rear/bottom. I put arrows to the mounting holes:
