Steering wheel doesn't fit?

I'm working on installing a Grant steering wheel, along with the adapter kit. If I leave the large spring on the column mtg post and put the steering wheel on, it fits. If I put the smaller spring in the center of the wheel, and atempt to install, no fit. What am I missing? Does someone have a decent blow up of the assembly? The one I have stinks and the assy manual is no help this time...

Re: Steering wheel doesn't fit?

Okay, after following the instructions, I ran in to what I hope is a minor problem. On page 112 of the Classic Industries catalog, Third item down is a wood steering wheel mounting kit. I have the circular piece on the left side. Or, at least I did until I borke it. Since I am not installing a wood steering wheel, and I have the correct Grant installation kit (#3162) Do I need to replace the piece I broke? I also have questions regarding the brush and lead assembly included in the installation kit....but one thing at a time.

Thanks

Re: Steering wheel doesn't fit?

I don't have a classic catalog... but...

Assuming the column is stripped to the turn siganal switch, the only original parts you need is the short heavy spring, and the turn signal cancelling cam. The cancelling cam is whitish plastic, round, slips over but is not spined to the shaft, and has a brass ring built into one side of it for the horn contact. If you broke that you'll need it. Everything "outside" of that peice is in the grant install kit.

Re: Steering wheel doesn't fit?

That's a good thing. There was still some question about the "brush and Lead" plunger piece in the kit. The Hub is different than the one shown in the instructions in the link above. I will be contacting them today, to see how serious the difference is. The Hub in the instructions has a recessed hole for the plunger. The hub that comes in the "correct" kit does not.

Re: Steering wheel doesn't fit?

Still struggling with this thing. Hubby and kids are gone so I am working on some of the smaller projects since I can't lift body parts. Anyway, I am still struggling with whether or not I need the piece I broke. TJS69 sent me 3 pages of instructions. On page 3 (link above) Steering Wheel Installation Instruction Suplement, there is a picture of a ??? (I don't know what) with an arrow pointing to it. This is the piece I broke (the plastic tube). Do I need to replace it? If so , what is it???? Where do I find one?
