Can you help with my backspacing and tire size?

Right now I have (4) 235-60-14's. This winter I installed a Hotchkis TVS system. I'm looking at Vintage v40 wheels that are 17 inch. What is the widest tire I can go with on the front and the rear? What backspacing would be the best? The front size fits perfect so I dont want to change that profile.

I was thinking ---205/50/17 for the front ( same width and hight as the 14 )
and ---255/50/17 for the rear

Just not sure of the backspacing. Remember I have the 1 1/2 drop in the rear.

7" wide wheel on the front with a 4" back space, and an 8" wheel on the rear with about a 4.75' back space.

Thanks. The rear 4.75 wil fit a 255/50/17 no problem? How wide can I go?

Many go 255/45/17, and yes 255 is the widest you can go and be on the safe side. 275/40r17 will require alot of measuring and a 9.5" rim

Re: Can you help with my backspacing and tire size?

I just got off the phone with Newstalgia Wheel and the V40 only comes in a 3 3/4 backspace for the 17x7 that I want to do on the front. I can get the 4 3/4 for the rear. I'm going to do some measurements tonight. Do you think the 3 3/4 will fit with a 235/45/17?

Re: Can you help with my backspacing and tire size?

Use the links in the thread at the top of this forum to see just what backspacing does. Then take the biggest combo you know will fit and work it out from there. Example - the front of a '69 with a suspension (inc subframe mounts) in great shape can run a 17x8 with a 4.75 bs wheel and a max tire of 245/45 or safe 235/45...

An 8" wide wheel with 4.75 bs puts 3.25" of the wheel towards the fender and the other 4.75" towards the inner fender. Your 7" with 3.75 bs will also put 3.25" of the wheel towards the fender lip.

Just keep in mind, on the same size tire the sidewall will bulge more on a 7" wheel than it will on an 8" you may find a 235/45 might scuff the fender bolts on your 7" wheel but won't on the 8".

Do the same for the rear, again the '69 max 17" seems to be 275/40 on a 17x9.5 with a 5.5 bs. safer fit would be 255/45's go from there...

Thanks I think I understand. I just took off my tire and the rim has a 4 1/4 backspace 7 3/4" wide. I measured it from the bead to the mounting surface per the article.Whould that be right? 7 3/4? So with the 4 1/4 backspace that gives me 3 5/8th of the rim outward. A 7 inch rim with 3 3/4 backspace gives me 3 1/4 of the rim outward (1/8" less than the 7 3/4"). Do you think a 215/45/17 would fit and look similar to the one I have now because of the 7 inch rim? or would a 235/45 give me more of a bulge and be the same distance to the fender lip because of the 7 inch rim?
As for the rear...It's the same rim as the front. Vintage sells a 17x9 with a 5 inch backspace. I could go out 1/2 more with no problem And inward 3/4 no problem. Am I making any sence?? I think the 255/45 would look nice on the 9" rim...

Hey Thanks!
