Wheel/Tire Suggestions

Last year I bought a fully restored stock 69 RS/SS and immediately got the need to hot rod the car. I finally am getting the engine pulled and am having a local racing engine builder design/install a custom 454 (bored to 468) with all high performance parts. I am told it will be somewhere between 500-600 horsepower when done.

In order to keep this power under control I need to change my wheel/tire setup from stock 14/7 SS wheels with bias ply tires to something modern and wider. Any suggestions? I do not want to tub or mini-tub the car. I do not want to alter the brakes/suspension either at this moment. I have too much invested in the motor, but I do not want to get cheap wheels/tires.

What would you do?

Re: Wheel/Tire Suggestions

If you have no plans on lowering the car, get a set of drag radials on the rear. You can fit a 285 wide tire no problem on the rear if it isn't lowered. 275 wide will fit perfectly if you do not wish to roll the fender lips any.

What kind of look are you going for? Classic 15s or maybe 17s-18s?

I can give you the widths and backspacing, they will be the same for whatever diameter you wish to use.

Front: 8" wide wheels, 4.75 bs for stock height, 5.00" bs for lowered, 245 wide tires, 26" tall

Rear: 10" wide wheels, 5.50 bs for stock or lowered height, 285 wide tires for stock height, or 275 wide tires lowered, 26" tall tires.

Re: Wheel/Tire Suggestions

Nine Ball hit it pretty much on the nose. IT's hard to find 10" affordable wheels as those will have to be custom built. Your other, less expensive options are 7's and 8's, or 8's all the way around. This can be done in American Racing, or Vintage Wheel Works brands. Give me a call, or send me a PM and we can talk about what is best for you. Here's a car I put 17x8's all the way around on for a board member not too long ago:

Thanks, Jon
