Correct backspacing?

I have a 68 with 16" Rallys and since I have done a disk conversion in the front I have had problems with the tire rubbing on the outer fender chrome. It also rubs when I turn. It was rubbing before I went to disks, but now it is much worse. I am going to buy two new Rallys for the front and I am looking at 16*7 w/4.75 backspace and +6 offset. I have asked this before and been told to go with a 4" backspace, but have been searching around and see many folks (with 17*7) going with more backspace. Any suggestions???

Re: Correct backspacing?

Per ChevyHiPerformance Magazine you can do
16 inch wheel, 5.00 backspace, 8.5in width, 245/50 tire front
16 inch wheel, 5.50 backspace, 8.5in width, 255/50 tire rear

That said, for the front on a 7" rim a 4.25" backspace would be ideal.

Re: Correct backspacing?

245's in the front???? Wow!! Thanks for the reply. So far I have hear 4" and 4.25" for backspace. I am running a 225/55 tire by the way. Anyone else?

Re: Correct backspacing?

The math is simple, 8.5" rim at 5" backspace = dead center, go to 8" rim you need 4.75" backspace, 7.5" rim, 4.5" backspace, 7" rim, 4.25" backspace, to keep the rim dead center. Running a 225 you can definitely run a 4" backspace on a 7" rim by pushing the rim to the outerside by .25". If you were running an 8.5" run with a 235/245 tire you would have to run a 5" backspace because any less would result in the tire being to much on the outside and would rub the outer fender well lip. So if I were using 16"x7" I would go 4" backspace.

Re: Correct backspacing?

4"? I do have disks in the front, so should it be a bit more? Does the math reflect the disk brakes?
