Question 275/50/17 Too Tall or OK for 68 Camaro w/4:11 Gear?

Im in the process of getting my 17" Torq Thrust II Wheels and tires. Just as all of you have helped me with, for the rear wheel I plan on running the 17 X 9.5 with 5.5" inch back spacing.

Im still deciding on the front size wheel and backspacing for the front tire I plan on running a 225/45/17 tire based on some of Camaro photos you guys have provided. That is actually leadin to one of my questions...in choosing that size "Front" tire, which would be the best size wheel and backspace for that tire?

The rear tire though is my main concern in which I wanted all your expert opinions...Would a 275/50/17 be too tall of a tire to run on a 68 Camaro? Would it also actually fit in a stock 68 Camaro rear wheel well?

The reason I was thinking of the taller 275/50-17 over the 275/40-17 tire is becasue I will be running a 4:11 gear in the 12 bolt posi I have for it. A 4:11 gear has been said to be better with a taller tire from what Ive heard and read. WHat do all of you think about that?

Based on http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCal...?action=submit website it says that a 275/50-17 is a 27.82" inch tall tire.

A 275/40-17 would be a 25.66" inces tall...

What are all you opinions on this?

Thanks again!

Well... I think you'll be just fine... either way. Considering that there is only a 4 mph difference between them at 2500 rpm... and 4.6 mph at 3000 rpm.

That is a tall hoop. Hope the car sits up in the rear.

Re: 275/50/17 Too Tall or OK for 68 Camaro w/4:11 Gear?

Might be kinda tall... I have a 255/50/17 on the rear of mine now...
IMO it seems to "overfill" the wheel well.

By contrast, the 275/35/18 in this picture seems to fill the wheel well just right. IMO. The 275/35/18 is the same diameter as a 275/40/18.

It's called a Tire Mount Mate. It'll be for rent really soon.

Re: 275/50/17 Too Tall or OK for 68 Camaro w/4:11 Gear?

Ok thanks for the input guys. Since most of you think a 275/50/17 might be abit too tall for my ride, how will it work with the lower rear gear?
My main concern was with the 4:11 12 bolt posi I have and the rear tire height.

Do you all think the 275/40/17 will work well with a 4:11 gear out back?

Thanks

Even with the slightly taller tire, your 4.11 gears will still be unpleasant for highway driving with your M21. I'd make sure and get a tire that fits, and adjust the gear ratio accordingly. Consider overdrive.

Thanks BPOS.
Im actually running a built up TH400 Tranny in my 68 camaro with the 4.11 rear gear. The M21 trans your talking about is in my 71 Chevelle SS.

Not sure how much of a difference that makes in having a TH400 with a 4.11 rear gear in deciding rear tire height?

Go with the 275/40/17's for sure. The 50's wont look good. Next pick up a GV overdrive and slap in on the back of your TH400 and turn your 4.11's into 3.20's in a touch of a button!

Oops my bad - read the WHOLE signature, Al.

Either way, they're both 1:1 in high gear. The T400 will actually rev slightly higher due to converter slippage.

Old-school to say the least but I dearly loved my old L-60 and E-60/14's looks as far as a good balance between sidewall height and overall tire size on my car!!!!

Sucker flat looked MUSCULAR!! To me is all...............
