Tire size for 17X8 wheels....

Well I finally got my TTM's been on backorder since March. Now I need a recommendation on tires. I am thinking 245/45/17 on the back. I put my buddies 16 inch wheels and tires on my car and they rubbed bad!! I am not sure of the tire size. I am pretty nervous about the front tires now though. I am noticing most people on here run a 225 or 235/45 front tire, from the searches I have done on here. Any input would be great! Thanks Hawk

1969 Camaro stock suspension with new springs. TTM's with 4.5 backspace. Tires we attempted were 235/55/16. Any input would help. Thanks

Re: Tire size for 17X8 wheels....

The 235 is probably the better route since you only have 4.5" of backspace.

Re: Tire size for 17X8 wheels....

Can I run a 255/45/17 on the rear and 245/45/17 on the front. Would like a little wider tire on rear. Thanks for any help Brian

Re: Tire size for 17X8 wheels....

I just went through this on My 70 Camaro,
The best thing to do is get on the tire manufacture web cite i.e. BF Goodrich, Toyo, etc. and pick a tire and check the sizes and spec for the tires you are looking at. The manufacture specs will give you diameter, tire width and the best rim width for each tire size. This helped me a lot so I could compare the factory tire diameter/width with the new tires/widths rims I had.

I end up putting on 245/45 on the 17x9 Cragars 5.5" backspace on the rear and 235/45 17 x 8 Cragars 4.5" backspace on the front. Closet thing to original diameter tire for my 70.

Re: Tire size for 17X8 wheels....

I run 17x8's in front and 17x9.5's in the rear of my '69 Z/28 and my tires are 255/45's in front and 285/40's in the rear with no problems rubbing but these cars are all different so what works for me may not work for you...

Thanks John, I knew that had to be your car in Chevy High Perf. Looked awesome!!

My rims are 17X8 on all 4 corners. I am now considering 255/45/17 for the rear and 245/45/17 for the front. Will they work?

Re: Tire size for 17X8 wheels....

Hawk, I'm running 235/45 on the front of my 68' with 4 3/4" BS. The car has all Hotckis TVS suspension with ATS AFX front spindles. We first mounted 245/40 but the clearance was to tight in the lower back corner of the wheel well bolt to fender. Some guys change the inner fender well to fender bolts out to a apn head style , just to be safe so the tire doesn't "grab" it under hard compression. It depends how stiff your suspension is also. The rear are 18 x 9" with 5 1/4" BS and 275's, but a 67, 68' is alittle tighter than the 69 rear. I would stick with the 235/45 in the front to be safe.
