16's to 17's size questions before I order?

I currently run 16 x8 Vintage Wheel Works on my 68 with 4.5" backspacing all the way around with 245/50's on the front and 255/50's on the back and I have no rubbing issues what so ever. The backs are only 26" tall tires and I am looking to go to 27" or 28" tall tires on the back. Tirerack says that I would stay with the same 255/50's but in 17's to get to the 27" height I want.

Does this seem right? Would you recommend going with a 17 x 8" rim for the back or 17 x 9.5" rim? 255/50 might look small on that wide of a rim. I could also go with the 17 x 9.5" rim in the back and put a 275/40 tire on but I don't gain any height just width.

I do run the hotchkis setup all the way around, but I do have a 275/60/15 on a 15 x 8 rim drag radial and it fits as well, only a little close.

I love the look of Rayzor's rim combo on his car.

Thanks, Erik

Re: 16's to 17's size questions before I order?

Here's an old pic of my car with a 255/50/17 on a 17x8" on the rear. 225/50/16 in the front. I always thought they were mix matched. That's a BIG tire on the rear of these cars IMO. A 25.5-26" inch tall tire is better suited IMO.
Good Luck.

Re: 16's to 17's size questions before I order?

Why do you want to go with a taller tire?
If you are just trying too make the tire larger and fill the wheel wells better I recommend the 275/40R17 on an 9.5" rim
and putting in a 1" drop blocks along with the hotchkis leafs

If you want to improve your cruise RPM, I think you will only drop like 200-300 RPM at 70 MPH

Re: 16's to 17's size questions before I order?

I already have the Hotchkis drop springs on my car front and rear. I don't want to go any smaller then a 26" tall tire. I run 4:10 gears a no overdrive. I assume a taller tire will knock the gear down some. I currenty run the 255/50 on a 16" rim and it looks great but I don't care for the rims. I have the room for the 255/50/17 tire, thats not a problem. My car sits perfectly level now and I don't want to drop the front anymore. The car is low enough.

Eville, I think that rear tire looks perfect on your car. Maybe the fronts could be smaller to compsensate for the backs. When you say the tire is to big you just mean tall right. DDo you really think I can fit a 9.5" rim and 275/40/17 under my car? It looks like alot of people do it.

For racing I throw a 275/60/15 tire on there that is 28" tall and it looks decent.

Thanks, Erik

I have 18x9.5 with a 275/35/18 on the back now and they fit great. I need to get better pictures, but you can check my signature.

Re: 16's to 17's size questions before I order?

I just checked the tire heights
275/40R17 is 25.7" tall
255/50R17 is 27.1" tall (one brand said 27.5", but I checked 5 others at 27.1")
and eville's 275/35R18 is 25.6" tall
by the way very nice car eville

you RPM in 4th at 65 with the 255/50R17 would be 3314
with 275/40R17 it would be 3495
a difference of 181 rpm
so it doesn't make a lot of difference

also tirerack.com only shows 9 tires in 255/50R17 but 39 in 275/40R17

I just want you to have all the information available to you to make the decision, please don't think I am trying to force my opinion on you

Re: 16's to 17's size questions before I order?

I don't know how people are running 9.5" wide with 5.5" backspacing on the rears of there 68 camaros. My camaro is pretty much the stock setup besides the Hotchkis setup and I am running 16x8's with a 255/50 tire in the rear. i only have about an 1.25"-1.5" of clearance between the inside of the wheel and the inner fender well.

If you do the match, I run a 26" tall tire with about 10.1 tread section width. Guys running 17x9.5's w/5.5" backspacing are running a 275/40/17's, thats 11" wide section width and one more inch of backspacing.

How is that fitting on there cars. I run the original rearend and everything?

Those who are running this setup, how much room do you have between the inner tire and the inne fender/rearframe?

Thanks, Erik

Re: 16's to 17's size questions before I order?

very carefully
you have to realize that when the rear suspension moves it either moves both sides up or if just one side moves it ends up going in toward the inner fender
so you just let the outside stick out a little
and dont be afraid of an occasional rub on the inner fender on weird driveways

Re: 16's to 17's size questions before I order?

So how much room do people have, or what is safe to have on the inside of the wheel and the inner fender well. It seems like I would only have 1/2" of clearance.

I run 285/45-17's on a 9.5" wide wheel and I have about 5/8" inner clearance on the drivers side and about 3/4" on the inner pass side and no rubbing.Oh maybe an occasional inner rub on a weird driveway but not during everyday driving:

Clearance isn't the biggest issue as long as your suspension is firmly setup.
