16X8 wheel with 5" backspace, will that work on the front?

Is 5" backspace to much on a 16X8 wheel on the front of my 67 or will it fit OK? Thanks for the help!

The 5" backspace is a bit too much. You should put a bare 4 or 4.5 rim on there and add the difference extending into the wheel housing. You should be rubbing on the inside. I run 4.5 with disk brakes and it rubs on hard turns with 225-60-R15 tires.

Re: 16X8 wheel with 5" backspace, will that work on the front?

I have 16 x 8 with 4.5 back space. I have installed after market disc brakes and I was told that they move the wheel out and extra 3/8" and my tires are right on the edge of the wheel lip. I had a rub on the inside bolts on turns and the upper bolts on bumps.
I cured that by going to a cap screw on the fender bolts and a 50 series tire.
No rubs now.
I think the five might be just a little much. It would also depend on your suspension and brake set up.
Before I put the 6308 coils in, it had big block springs and drum brakes and I still got a rub on the inside lower fender bolt on tight turns with 235/60/15s.

I have owned 3 69 Z/28s: Garnet Red 30,000 mi unrestored.

I have 16x7 with 4" of BS and they rub. The part that is rubbing is the outer part of the inner fender, right behind the actual fender lip. According to Detroit Speed, with a 7" wheel you should run 4-1/4" to 4-3/8" of BS. I plan on trying a set with 4.5" of spacing since my Centerlines have to be in 1/2" increments.

I run 17x7, 4" bs, 225-50-16 tires. Car is very low.
No rubbing ever. Just lucky I guess?

8" rim with 4 1/2" bs should be ideal, but these cars are all different.

I assume you mean 225-50-17 ? Mine are 235-55-16 with the 4" BS. Rubba rubba in the wheel tubba. I just came up with that; should trademark it maybe.

I also have the DSE front coilovers and already took it apart once (no fun) to raise it up (no help). That was why I called DSE and they gave me what they would put on it it they were building it.

Another thing I forgot to point out is that if you put too MUCH backspace on the front, you can always put a shim ring on and play with it, but if you have too little (like me) you are S.O.L.

Naaa, the other end was a typo, rims are 16x7, not 17.

My front tires are short, 23.5". That makes a difference, the taller the wheel is, the more space it takes up when you turn and the more likely it is to get into either the front or rear inner fender bolts, or the framerail.

Another thing many don't see is the effect the suspension's camber, and camber change on compression, makes with tire clearance.

The standard geometry cambers the top of the tire OUT when the fender compresses. With the guldstrand mod, my tire cambers in. With the car straight and at ride ht, you can't get your hand between the tire and the fender lip, but it never rubs.

Your 235-55's are pushing the envelope a bit on a 67-68 in front. The 225-50's are a lil narrower and more than a little shorter.

Re: 16X8 wheel with 5" backspace, will that work on the front?

You got me thinking again that maybe instead of changing my wheel out (expensive and I'll never find someone to buy my new fronts now), maybe I should just try a different tire size. Duh. Keeping the same brand of tire (Cooper Cobra), they have a 215/55. Thats the only other option, unless I use a different brand on the front. I guess I could, since I'm a blackwall out now front and rear. But would that look goofy since the thread pattern is different ?

I like the look of the 235/55, and I have not professionally aligned the front yet, and I was going to get that done before I started changing things out.
