17" Back space

Is it true that you can get a wider rear tire onto a 1st gen, with a correctly back spaced 17" rim than you can with a 15" rim?

Yes, because the shock mount on the shock plate actually sits inside the wheel.

That is exactly right, as the outside diameter of a wheel grows, so does the inside diameter of a wheel, swallowing the majority of the suspension pieces that were a problem with a 15".
