Tires for my Pacecar

Need some recommendations for STOCK or close to stock size tires that will fit on my 14 by 7" wheels. I'm getting pretty tired of my bias ply goodyears and my old BFG Radial TAs are probably not safe to put back on the car since they were new in about 1985. I'm looking for something in the 225/235 width range, either 55/60 aspect ratio and obviously 14 diameter. I've consigned myself to getting blackwalls since the only raised white letter tires I think look decent are the BFG Radial T/As, everything else seems to have either to much white lettering, or not enough. I'd also like some unidirectional tread design. I've owne my car since 83 and have probably only put 40 to 45K on it so tread mileage is probably secondary to getting a decent riding tire without alot of road noise. Its tough to find 14" tires to start with unless they are going on a boat trailer or something similar.

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

If you use tireracks tires by size you'll see only BFG are available in 235/60-14 of all the brands the sell. They don't carry any 225's on 55/60 series at all and your best choice is the BFG 60 or 70 series or Firestone Firehawk 500 in 70 series... 14" tires are getting harder to find and although tirerack doesn't carry every brand tire made they have the best database to use for research...

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

I was able to fit 245-60-14s on my 68 Camaro with no clearance issues. The 245s also fill the wheelhouses nice. The 69s have more room in the front, but less in the rear. Another good alternative would be 225-70-14s.
Hope this helps.

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

Thats the problem with tire rack, you can't just search on 14" tires and see everything they sell, you have to search via make and model of car and even then it thinks all camaros had like P78-195 tires. I don't really want the BFG Radial TA's if I can avoid it (and certainly not at 86 bucks a tire) and the firehawks are one of those tires where the white lettering is to close to the edge of the rim for me. I could put them blackwall out but if those we the only choices I would just stick with the BFG R T/As. There must be some kind of decent tire out there besides these 2?

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

Mark you're missing their "tires by size" search. Sure you have to designate more than 14" but if you put in a complete size you will get a list of brands and models in that size then you can click on one and read about the tire and click on "spec" and it will list every size made for that tire. There isn't a better way or larger database out there that I have found...

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

This is sort of what I'm looking for:

These are Ziex ZE-512 tires , the widest they come in 14" is P205/60R-14, which I could live with. They are only 63 per tire at discounttiredirect.com. For the most part these tires have been replaced with ZE-912s but I like these better. Wish they were available in a little wider size though.

Here is a T/A radial dimension chart.

Go to Coker Tire. They have a conversion from bias to radial sizes.

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

205/60-14's are only 23.6" tall I would think you would want to run something about 25"-26" tall on a '69. I think some 70 series tires would be more inline but I know that's not the look you have in mind...

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

I'm running 235/60-14 BFG radial T/As which are 25.1" tall (presently in the toolhouse collecting dust), or F70-14" Polyglas tires which are roughly 26.2" tall. Neither seem to affect the speedometer by that much, maybe +/- 5%. I would like to find something in the 215/70 to 235/60 range, but outside the radial T/A's the pickings are kind of slim, if not nonexistant.

I find it hard to believe with all the little foreign cars out there that there aren't more 14" tires available out there. I don't really want to get a set of 15" rallys just so i can get a slightly better selection of tires, mainly for cost, but also because then I'll have two complete sets of rims and tires in my toolhouse collecting dust.

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

They are kind of pricey, but the redline radials are nice. Coker recommends 215/70R14 to replace the F70/14.

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

They do make em in 215/70R14 and 225/70R14 for 75 and 78 apeice. I don't like the lettering on those though. with the door decals and these tires screaming indy500 I think its a bit much. I could put them on black side out though.

There no freakin way I'm paying Coker prices for anything, my cars a driver, not a trailer queen. I picked up the Polyglas tires (I know they are not correct) becasue I got 5 of of them for 200 bucks off of Ebay with the nubs still on them. I could almost have Pirelli make me some custom tires for their prices.

Re: Tires for my Pacecar

You might be right about being over the top, but what the heck. Anyway, the black side is really cool too, Mark. They have an authentic Indy emblem embossed in the sidewall. I had just bought my T/A's when I found out about these. Next set for sure!

I put a set of 14" on my 67 RS and they drove very nice. You can check my TC page and I think I have pictures. Black walls look nice too.

I think someone re-produces the Firestone Wide Oval ?
