Widest wheels I can fit on my 67

i have a 67 camaro and i plan to put some 17" american racing torq thrust wheels on it...what's the widest wheel and tire combo i can put for the front and rear??? i heard i can get a 17x8 with 5" backspacing on a 275 tire on the rear....is that correct or can i go wider??? don't plan on cutting or modifying the stock wheel wells...and as for the front...whats the widest wheel/tire i can use and...what backspacing??? using 2" drop spindles in front with stock height springs and hotchkis 1.5" drop rear leaf springs...any suggestions, help or pix would be most appreciated!

Re: widest wheels i can fit on my 67

you can run an 8" wide wheel on the front with a 4.875" or 5" backspace and a 9" or 9.5 on the back with 5.25" and 5.5" to 5.75" respectively, on the rear.

Does it matter if you have disc brakes or drums?

No matter disc or drums. Same track width.

Re: Widest wheels I can fit on my 67

I run 18x9 with 5.25 BS/275x40 in the back. Had to use 1/4 inch spacer as I was getting a slight rub on the inner fender well. Spacer did the trick. I agree 9.5 wheels will work as well as the 275 tire is still wider than the wheel. Fronts seem to be the more troublesome. It appears problems tend to start for some at with 245 tires. Do some searching and you will find that half the guys running 245 up front have no rubbing issues while the other half do. I went with 18x7 wheel and 4.25 BS/225x45 tire just to be safe. If you want the 8 inch wheel, I would recommend the 235 tire. See this threads (if you haven't already) for some good info:

Re: Widest wheels I can fit on my 67

While everyone wants the widest tires possible we must be careful since all cars are different. How much the car is lowered. Frames can be bent, rear ends not centered, and panels installed incorrectly. A 275 on a 9" wheel is not that much bigger then a 255 on a 9" wheel, 3/4" or less. Trust me with street tires your ability to hook up will not change. If you spin a 255 you will spin a 275! You really need to measure your own car for the correct fit. I went with 255 50 17 @ 27" dia more so to fill the wheel opening. I have zero rubbing issues and mine is lowered 3".

Re: Widest wheels I can fit on my 67

thinking of going with 18's in the rear!!! could i still run a 9.5" wide wheel with the same backspacing as the 17's or does that all change??? i got sold this weekend at pomona...some guy has a 67 camaro rs dumped on 18's in front and 20's in the rear...now i'm not a fan of muscle cars on huge rims but this car looked amazing....coulda been the air bags in front totally slamming the car to the ground but...who knows...anyways i've decided to go with 17's in front and 18's in the rear
