XT and IF steel wheel???

I've gotta about a 4 part question maybe some of you more learned guys can help me with.

1. I understand that the XT and IF wheels are identical as far as visual appearance is concerned and also think that the XT wheel only came on 69? BBC 69 Camaros and BBC 69 COPO cars. Was the IF or XT wheel also on 2 gen Camaros? Is there any other wheel code that would be visually identical to the XT wheel besides the IF wheel?

2. If there are other codes that are identical to the XT wheel, what are they and what model year/make cars did they come on?

3. Does anyone know of a site(s)that would have a list of all early GM
(60's & 70's) steel wheel codes? I'm trying to help an ebay buddy that dabbles in old wheels.

4. If you were old school and were going back to the 14" steel wheel/poverty caps on your 69 (I have 2 IF wheels and looking for 2 more), What size tire would you run?
205-70 or 215-70 or 215-60? I think that I want a tire that would be roughly similar to and old F70-14 with no fender rubbing. A g-70 looks to big on the car. Car is not raced and will be used for 100 to 250 mile round trips and some crusing with the local classic chevy club. 3.36 gears and 4 speed till I can pick up a 5 speed for reasonable money. Thanks, Jim

Re: XT and IF steel wheel???

IFs were used very briefly. Someone had a BBC for an early LA SS and it listed them. XT was the standard SS 14 x 7 wheel; many COPOs also used it. Someone commented that they had a car with 2 of each and factory wire wheel covers did not fit the IFs. So there must be some difference.

I believe Pontiac also used XT wheels on the '69-'70 Grand Prix.

Re: XT and IF steel wheel???

Mostly correct William. Pontiac used the IF wheels on the 69-70 GP's if the car got 14x7's and full size hub caps. 69 Chevrolet cars and 70 Olds Cutlass are the only ones that used the XT wheels as far as I know.

The 70 and later Camaros used a 14x7 wheel that had a flatter center area and had a different appearance but mostly the same offset as the XT and IF. The XT and IF are the only two 14x7 wheels that share the same look.

Re: XT and IF steel wheel???

Colvins' book has a copy of the Kelsey-Hayes engineering drawing for a "14 x 7 JJ wheel." It shows that such a wheel was furnished under 2 codes, IF and XT. The IF codes reference 97xxxxx [Pontiac] part numbers; XT codes are 39xxxxx [Chevy] part numbers. Each was furnished 4 ways: bare, oiled, primed and primed with a service label. So it appears they are the same.

GM used 14" x 7" wheels on millions of '78-'87 G-bodies and possibly '78-'79 X-bodies. They are virtually identical to IF/XT wheels except I believe they have 4 hub cap mounting pads.

Re: XT and IF steel wheel???

William is totally correct.

There is no disputing the IF wheels did come on some Van Nuys 69 Camaros. My original buildsheet can verify it. I have an 11B Van Nuys built RS/SS. Kurt S has verified this and seen it on more than one sheet, I believe.

There are at least 3 different variations of IF wheels that I have seen. Most of the difference is in the center of the wheels and is cosmetic. Mostly due to the different manufacturers of these wheels. They are identical to the XT wheels.

Re: XT and IF steel wheel???

Thanks for all your help guys.

I have found another set of what looks like what William has described as coming off or 70's-80's X or G Bodied cars. The pictures LOOK like the IF's that I have but they have 4 hubcap bumps instead of the 3 adn the center of the wheel may be slightly different.. Will my poverty caps fit on the 4 bump wheels? Seller hasn't got back to me on the codes.

My home monitor died yesterday so I went down and got a HP flat screen which I had been wanting to do anyway. After I got it all hooked back up, I couldnt get the windows program to run. It kept giving me multiple choices of how to restart it but I messed with it for 2 hours and gave up. Probably did more harm that good. I'm at work now and will get a help line number for HP and Compac. Wish me luck.

Re: XT and IF steel wheel???

CL EM JZ UC and maybe some other letter combination 70 and later 4 knob 14x7 steel wheels can still use the 68-69 Camaro, 69-70 Nova poverty style dog dish caps. It's just that the XT and IF wheel centers are different and the 4 bump wheel differences can be seen far away by anyone that is up on the different styles. That didn't keep me from putting a set of UC wheels on my 70 Nova cause they are a whole lot cheaper and most people just aren't that sharp. To see the differences, the open spaces that air flows thru between the center and the outer rim are curved around the center part of an XT or IF and the same area on CL EM JZ and UC the wheel center is nearly square on the outside, leaving a different shape opening for the air to pass thru.

Re: XT and IF steel wheel???

Thanks again guys.

I have found an internet dealer that has plenty of the RWL BFG TA radials. The 205/70-14 is $60 plus $55 freight for a set of 4. Found another site that has free freight but they had the 205 on back order since Aug and said that they probably could not get them ...... The 215's were $78 so I'll probably go with the 205's.

Think I'll keep looking for 2 more IF wheels so that they all match.

Wife dumped all my picts and documents from the computer. Great. Hope that I can get someone at a computer dealer to figure out if they can be recovered. Thanks, Jim
