Tires too tall?

Just ordered new tires for my 87 z28. Currently whats on there are 235/60/15 on rear and 215/60/15 in front. The tires I wanted in those 2 widths only came as 70s. I did the whole math deal to figure out how much taller it would be from the 60s and came up with about 3/4 taller which I figured wouldn't be a problem, but ever since the sales rep called me and said he thought they might be too tall Im having second thoughts. And Even if they do fit are they going to look rediculously big? Anyone else have 70s on their car? specifically on a 3rd gen? They should arrive tomorrow so I guess I will find out.

Re: tires too tall?

The only other brand I found with the 2 sizes I wanted was the bf goodrich radials which I know everyone uses but the reviews weren't all that spectacular. That was on tire rack anyway.

235/70/15 tires will probably rub on an '87 Z28. I'm pretty sure they will look WAY too tall. I've always found 235/60/15's to look good all the way around on a third gen Z28, if I were you I'd go with that size on the front too. How about the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500, if you don't like the BFG's?

I've always liked the BFG Radial TA but more for the appearance than the performance, although the performance in my opinion is adequate for the price.

The firehawks are what I ordered. Only reason I have 215s in the front is because a while ago when I switched them the guy who installed them told me thats as wide as I could go in the front. Guess it wouldn't hurt to try it. And finally got the tires today and just by looking at them they look too tall.

The 215 firehawk is discontinued...I manage a Firestone, they still amke the tire in other sizes, usually in truck/suv

Hmm... I'm pretty sure he's wrong, if I remember correctly about 12-15 years ago a friend of mine had an '85 Z28 with 235/60's all the way around on the factory Z28 wheels, I don't remember him having any issues. Irocs came with 245/50/16 tires all the way around, but I think they had different offsets front and rear.

Re: Tires too tall?

235/60-15 tires are 26.1 inches tall.
235/70-15 tires are 28 inches tall.

I donít think that 28 inch tall 70 series tires will fit or look right on a 3rd gen Camaro.

I have 235/70-15 tires on the front, and 255/70-15 tires on the rear of my í56 Chevy. They are tall tires but they fit fine on the old 56 with no rubbing issues whatsoever (see the picture in my signature). These old 50ís cars were designed for tall tires.

I drove it for the first time in 1972 when I was 15.

Better looking than a '56 Ford or Plymouth.

Yea, might order the 235/60's all the way around and see how it looks. Dont know if I will like the look of the front tires sticking out so much. If not I guess Im going to get the BF radials.

Re: Tires too tall?

Just a thought - since these tires aren't much good by today's standards anyway consider possiblity of going to some 17" rims & tires. You're already 1/2-way there with the new tires. For the Camaro I recently got some very nice 17s, awesome tires, balanced sent to door for $1,100 from discount tire. I recently put some new Firehawks on my C-3 vette and after replacing a bent rim spent a few hundred less than new & Improved rims/tires would have cost. Just a thought since looking back I'd do over again if had the chance on my vette.

Re: Tires too tall?

Ordered the 235/60 for front and back. I will see how it looks. Should be fine. Put the 215 and 235s next to eachother and I was surprised at how the 235s were only a slight bit wider. Anyway thanks for all the info! O and I put the 235/70s next to my front tires, WOW they are tall. They were just about the same height as the top of the fender.
