Question 17X8 w/ 4.5 in backspacing...How large of tire on a 69?

I just bought on Ebay for measuring purposes a 17X8 with 4.5 in backspacing Hopster that appears to be in very good condition... I am wondering if I can fit a 275/40/17 on this one, or what is the largest I can run on it on the rear... on a 69?

Or... could I run it on the front with a smaller tire, and then get the 17X9.5 for the rear? I would think that it might sit in a bit far with that much backspacing on the front... But not really sure...

I forgot to mention that it is a stock suspension for now... I really like the way it sits..

Re: 17X8 w/ 4.5 in backspacing...How large of tire on a 69?

yes you can run a 275 on that rim and tuck it out back on a 69.

I personnly think a 255 is max to put on a 8inch, the side wall bulges and just does not look as good imo, not to mention a 255/45/17 is slightly larger diam than the 275/45/17 and under a inch smaller in width so is it really worth the bulged sidewall look?

All that said and done though.... the backspacing on that wheel would make it more suit for the front than the rear I believe.

Jeff. If I run this on the front... I have stock drum brake spindles right now... Not sure if they will rub or not.. I am putting disc brakes on the front this spring.. but probably not going to drop the front end any... Can I run a 235/45/17 or 225 without rubbing? I would like to stay about the same diameter as my 215/65/15's on the front... a tad smaller might not be too bad...

That is not enough backspacing for a '69 Camaro,a 245/45-17 will have you very close to the fenders in front...b/spacing in the 4.75-4.875" range will fit much better.

You can run a 275/40-17 rear comfortably on a 9.5" wide wheel on a '69 Camaro,on that 8" wheel,I wouldn't run bigger than a 255/45.
The correct b/s for a 9.5" wide wheel on the rear of a '69 Camaro would be 5.5".

I do not think it will rub on you since its a 17 and these cars came with alot smaller sized as stock.

I would think you could manage a 235/45 or 225 on a 69, in the pix below that guy has 17x8" 4.5 BS 245-45-17 front and 17x9.5" 5.5 BS 275-40-17 rear.

It's not the size,it's the backspace and 4.5" on that wheel will have you too close to the outside fender...believe me.
I've had that combination on my car and it will rub, your suspension has to be set on kill for it not to.

I was saying it would not rub with a 235 or 225 tire on that rim, which it should not (we have ran 235's on a 4.5 backspace with no susepnsion mods on my bro's 69), I posted a link to show how tight a 245 would be on a 4.5 rim.

I've run a 245/45-17 on a 8" wide wheel w/4.5" b/s on my car w/o issues but it's as tight as can be and usually you have to remove the top inner fender bolt to pull it off...which is no biggie.

I'm just saying if you're shopping wheels and you have a choice of b/s,something in the 4.75-4.875" range will work much better...

Re: 17X8 w/ 4.5 in backspacing...How large of tire on a 69?

Another option would be to run a 255/50/17. I run this size on a 8" wheel on my 67 thats lowered 3" with no issues. I did not want to deal with triming or rolling the lips. I struggled with the wider vs taller thing. I felt the 275/40/17 looked too small / short IMO. They just didn't fill up the wheel well enough especially on a 67 or 68. The 275's are 25.6" tall vs 27" for the 255's. On a 8" wheel you are only giving up about .75" or less. On the street if your car won't hook up on a 255 that 3/4 " is not going to make a difference, ask me how I know? A 275/50/17 also fits on a 8" wide wheel and is 27.8" tall and looks Street Fighter bad ***.

Wow Kevin... Sure like the looks of your 67... I would consider that size as well, but will it look okay on the rear on a 69 with stock multi-leafs?

Re: 17X8 w/ 4.5 in backspacing...How large of tire on a 69?

I would bet there are a few 69's with a 255/50 and stock suspension out there? Ask for pics. Keep in mind all cars will be slightly different. Type of brakes, rear end placement, and panels. I've seen as much as an inch difference on stock same year cars. I'm sure there are a bunch of 69's that are running 245/45/17's pretty common size and they are < 1.5" shorter and < .5" less in width. They should be able tell you if theres enough room.

Heres a web site to check tire sizes. http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

17x9.5 with 5.5 bs is a great fit on 69's(rear). Run a 275/40/17 tire. For the front 17x8's with 4.875 to 5" bs with 235/45/17's.

Re: 17X8 w/ 4.5 in backspacing...How large of tire on a 69?

UPDATE:

Okay... I received the wheel and it is a minimum of 4 3/4" backspacing instead of 4.5"...

So... My intention will probably run these in the back with a 255/45/17 or close to it, OR... put it on the frt with a 235/45/17 and then order the 17X9.5 with 5.5 in bs and a 275/40/17 rr... so with the added 1/4" bs, would I be okay to run the 235, or would I have to go to a 225/45/17?

I would really like to run the 235's on the front, and if I run these on the back... I will order the 17X7's for the front... I think with the 235's on the frt and the 255's on the back, it will be close to my 215/65/15's on the front and 255/60/15's on the back... I think it would sit very similar... or possibly try to squeeze the 275's on the 8's but it doesn't sound like it would look very good... Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

I just called Jegs and they told me that the AR Hopster in a 17X9.5 are discontinued... He told me I couldn't get them even if I went directly through American Racing...
