BF T/A's vs Firehawk 500's-Which one to go with?

Searched through most of the archives re. old school tires suggestions, and have narrowed down my choice to two brands that are both affordable and can be purchased up here...BFGoodich T/A and the Firestone Firehawk 500...in a 225/70or60/14".

After talking to a couple of dealers, they felt that the two are pretty close on performance, with the Firehawk being better in the rain.

The tread design has remained the same for the T/A for years, as the old standby, with the Firestone tread being upgraded.

Both are pretty quiet which is important to me, with the Firestone being just a bit quieter than the T/A.

Up here they are just dollars apart in price, and with a similar rebate being offered.

So...was wondering what you guys would go with ... the much used T/A's or the newer type Firestones?...I noted that neither company is independent today, but are part of a larger tire organization, eh?

Thanks in advance.

Re: BF T/A's vs Firehawk 500's-Which one to go with?

Well, if you decide to go 60 series, you're buying T/As; no Firehawk Indy 500 in that size (at least in US catalog).

You can search "firehawk" here; plenty of folks have them and like them.

You can go to TireRack.com, search tires by size using the 225 70 14 size, and then compare the two side by side. Tire Rack has subjective ratings for each tire, and the Firehawk does score better subjectively.

That said, I don't like them. IMO, modern tread designs on a 1st gen look okay in the sizes where they are, by default, necessary (like the 16, 17, 18, 19, etc size wheels). I just don't like that tread design in a 14 inch or 15 inch. But lots of people do like them.

I hear ya on the raised letters of the "Firehawks"...they do look a bit more splashy/gaudy? But, also trying to take into consideration if indeed upgrades would be worth the difference between the two. Was hoping that anyone running the Firestones would chime in and share what they think of them. On the surveys...the FH does come out the better, but a lot less being used, eh?

Thanks for the input, Bill!

Re: BF T/A's vs Firehawk 500's-Which one to go with?

I went with the Firestones on my coupe because everyone has the BFG's.
Size is close to stock: 215/70/14's, as there isn't much choice for 14" x 6" rims.
Plus a Firestone dealer is walking distance from my house and gave me a killer deal.

I wasn't sure about mounting RWL in or out, do you think I made the right choice?

Re: BF T/A's vs Firehawk 500's-Which one to go with?

I've purchased both BFG and Firehawks new, not a lot of difference in feel on the road. One of my Firehawks developed a large bubble on the sidewall, defective, and had to have it replaced. Kind of made me suspicious of the engineering of the Firehawks.

I have BFG's on the Z and Firehawks from Diamondback (redlines) on the Firebird. I like the Firehawks better. Maybe it's that the Firebird just drives better.

Thanks James/John, for the chance to see them on the Cam... and for the rest of you guys for the input/opinions.

After reading what the "experts" have to say, and reading up on the specs...I guess it's more of a coin toss for me...both seem to fit the bill.

Again, for the time taken to share...I appreciate it. What a great site this is, eh?
