17x9.5 rear tire question

You guys that are running 17x9.5 wheels with a 275/40/17 rear tire. Do you have to relocate the rear shocks in order to do this? Is there any trimming or rolling of the lip to fit this combo on a 69 camaro with a gm 12bolt? Any input is appreciated, thanks.

Re: 17x9.5 rear tire question

No you don't have to move the lower shock location, you may have to roller the Qtr lip all depends on your Camaro each one is a little different. But a 275/40/17 will fit with no problem. I'm running a 275/40/18 on mine zero issues, with 5.75 back space. Would have been nice to get a BS of 5.80 tho to me seems like 5.80 bs would tuck it a little better.

Re: 17x9.5 rear tire question

Mine fit perfect. I do get slight rubbing on the upper inner fender on hard curves and have been thinking about either an 1/8" spacer or just taking the sledge to them. Thought my TrueTrac was acting up until I realized that the tires had a tight fin or gill pattern on the sidewall and it almost made a whining sound when they touched.

Re: 17x9.5 rear tire question

Hello!

I installed 17x9,5 LT 1 Corvette wheels with 2" spacers. I had little rubbing on the inside with 255/50/17. And nearly no clearence on the outside. Sorry I couldn't imagine 275 without rubbing. I had hotchkis three leave springs, Hellwig stabi and koni shocks, pu bushings all over. So the car is very stiff. With the new leave springs I think there is no rubbing any more. In normal stance there is enough clearence to the inner fender but if you have slant terrain the tire goes extremely close to the chassis because your axle and chassis horizontal is now not parallel. You must decrease this movement => stiffer springs, stabi etc..

I have these special terrain every time I'm driving because the yard in front of my garage has this shape. The chassis front tilts to the left on the street but the rear axle is still on the yard => rubbing (in the past). But you can drive on a wedge with one rear wheel without seeing any rubbing.

Re: 17x9.5 rear tire question

Steiner,
Do you have any side pics of your car?...I'm thinking of going with 17" Cragar SS wheels on my 69. It's a multi-leaf car, with Caltracs and Edlebrock shocks, and I'm wondering if they'll fit. I can see in the pic above that your rear tires aren't tucked up inside the wheel well, which is the look I'm going for.

Bad angle maybe. The front and rear tire edges are physically inside the upper fender lips. I've got four leaf reproduction leafs with no drop and Eibach 1" lower front coils. The pics are from right after install so it's settled some now.

Here's a couple I went out and shot in the garage just now.

Re: 17x9.5 rear tire question

If I'm not mistaked I believe we rolled the lip ever so slightly. My 18's fit very well. It's the fronts that scrub sometimes when I turn only because it is lowered.

MB Wheels "Old School" from Discount Tire Direct. Might be made in the same factory as the Coy wheels. The center cap is the same with the oval indention but it's blank. Need to get some black bowtie stickers or something to go in there.

Re: 17x9.5 rear tire question

I run 18x9 5.25BS with 275/40. I had very slight rub on the inner wheel well on steeps and turns. A 1/4" spacer did the trick. I was worried that I may have to roll the lip but did not have to after all. When the rear compresses the tires actually angle a bit towards the middle of the car so what may look like a potential lip rub may actually be just fine.

Re: 17x9.5 rear tire question

I just bought a set of Vww 45's 17*9 and the rear tires are 275's nitto 555's and they have a full inch inside and 3/4 outside. The wheels i took off were 16*9's and the tires were 255's....when i measured the tire width's they were the same 10.5 inches, so with that said, make sure you look at the manufacturers tire widths

Re: 17x9.5 rear tire question

Guys, thanks for the pics and info. I went ahead and ordered my wheels and tires last night. I went with a Centerline Laser wheel and the new Nitto 5R drag radial. I will post some pics when the wheels come in, should be about three weeks or so for centerline to make the wheels. Here is a pic of my 69 with the TTII's, I'm currently running. The TTII's will be up for sale when the new wheels arrive. They are 17x7 fronts and 17x8 rears. Thanks again for the help.
