differences in clearance

I'm scratching my head...I installed Foose 18"x9" rears. On the passenger side clearance is great, but on the driver side it looks like the outer lip could maybe touch if I hit a bump in the road.
Why would there be a difference?? The axle is centered as far a I can see.

Re: differences in clearance

It's pretty common. Production tolerances weren't that tight, previous collision damage/panel replacement etc. could be causes. Mine is off by 1/8" which doesn't sound like much but it's actually quite a bit when cramming big tires in there. Enough that I had to trim a bit off of the fender lip on the pass side.

Re: differences in clearance

Yeah what BPOS said. Even if the car is all original when these cars were new they were different from side to side. That's why some cars can fit a 10" wide wheel in there with a 275 tire and others like yourself have trouble with a 9" wheel.

Re: differences in clearance

I have the same rims on my 68. Is your back space 5.25"? Keep in mind that when rear compresses the wheels tend to go up-and-in instead of straight up. Mine were rubbing a little bit on the inner fender well but .25" spacer on each side fixed that issue. Worst case, you may have to roll the lip.
