68 Camaro Rim backspace

I have a 1968 camaro, trying to get Rally rims with the stock backspace or whatever would work best for my car.
I am getting a 15 x 7 rim, and thinking of a 225/70R/15, not sure yet.
One place selling Wheel Vintique has a 4.5" backspace, and one sells a 4.25" backspace. I was told from YearOne it should be 4.25".
What would look best and give me less problems?
And, are the Rally rims sold through Classic Industries ok? They are less expensive compared to all places for a kit of 4. Are they any good? Does not mention that they are a Wheel Vintique if it matters.

Re: 68 Camaro Rim backspace

Are you sure this backspace is for a 15x7 rim?

4.25 and 4.5 are good backspaces for 8" wide rims, but too much for a 15x7.

I would think a 15x7 rim with 4" backspace is about right, but let's see what others think !

Re: 68 Camaro Rim backspace

My 15x7 AR TT-D's are 3.76" backspace. I run 225/60's up front and 245/60's in back with no rubbing. I think a 7" width with 4-4.25" backspace would put the wheels way too far inside.

Re: 68 Camaro Rim backspace

thanks for the help, really appreciate it, I almost bought some with a 4.5 backspace.
I am having a hard time finding a place that comes with one that is 4" backspace.
Do you know a good distributor who can make the size I need, maybe in a whole kit. Most places only give one size.
I am leaning to a 4" backspace. Not sure about a 3.76". I talked directly to Wheel Vintiques and they said that common stock size they would do for what I want is a 4" backspace.
I would like to find a deal who can help more, YearOne, Classic Industries and Ricks do not seem to offer much at all for help.
thanks again

Not sure what stock was,but 8's on the rear with 4.5'' BS is perfect. I would think 7's and 4'' would be about centered as possible ?

Re: 68 Camaro Rim backspace

I have heard that 4.25" BS was stock, found one place says the usually sell as a 4" backspace. I am pretty sure I will go for the 4" BS. Any thoughts On a good place to get a set of Rally Rims for a 68 camaro? Most places do not carry a 4", or customer service is not good at all.

Re: 68 Camaro Rim backspace

Stock for 68 would've been 14's (not sure of bs) or 15 x 6 on the Z/28. In 69 the Z got 15 x 7. The common FW GM rallys (from the 70's) were 15 x 7 with 4 1/8 " bs. They'd fit front or back just fine....depending on tire size.

The FW GM rallys are quite common and relatively cheap. Probably could put a want ad on here at TC ! I've got 1 I'd sell. Summit carries Wheel Vintiques in all the popular sizes at unbeatable prices...unbeatable shipping too. WV are slightly different than GM rallys but look the same when installed with rings and caps.

Re: 68 Camaro Rim backspace

From what I can find, the 15" wheel used on '68 Z/28 models was a 15x6 with 4.125" backspacing, and any 15x7 used on a firsts gen Camaro was 4.25" backspacing.

These are 15x7 with 4.25" backspace and a 235/60 tire on a '69 with front drum brakes. The fronts touched the frame on full lock. However, 15" rims back then would've gone on disc brake equipped cars which I believe push the wheel out a tad.

Re: 68 Camaro Rim backspace

Good point about the brakes. Need to correct myself... I just measured the bs on a FW and come up with 4 1/8. Edited my post above

A little excerpt from Ricks catalog; " the optional f70-14 Firestone Wide Oval tires factory installed on First Gen Camaros had a 26.2" overall diameter with an 8.3" section width".

Tom, a BFG 225/70 15 is 27.4" OD & 6.7" tread width. Not sure how to compare section to tread measurements ??

Just some food for thought....
