Shelf life on tires?

Any experts on tires and their shelf life before being mounted. Buddy just gave me a new set of Yokohamas that he bought in 1995. Still had the stickers, shipping labels and shrink wrap around them. Still good? They've been in his garage, not outside, obviously not mounted yet...hey they're new tires? When I asked him if they were any good he looked at me like I was crazy.

Most say...6 years to 8, depending upon uv exposure, then it drops. Heat also plays a part. I would think that personal driving habits would come into play as well.

Great link Steiner, I guess these are destined for my "roller wheels", and they look so good.

Re: Shelf life on tires?

I have a set of tires I bought years back in the basement unmounted. I'm not sure if the tiure store will mount them at all now becuase they are so old. I'm not sure what I want to do with them, can't decide to run them or not.

Re: Shelf life on tires?

You're welcome. A few of the tire companies like Michelin, Firestone, et al say 10 years. I put a set about that old on my truck last year but it doesn't get driven much.

That's one of my dilemmas. Do I put these old tires on a car that doesn't get driven much and might see some highway or do I put them on a daily driver with a 24 Y.O. driver and let him wear them out. I'm concerned if my son uses them that they will see extreme high speed use. If I put them on my car they might be 20 years old before there are worn out.

Re: Shelf life on tires?

In most cases passenger vehicle tires wear out before they reach old age. I change tires on my RV every 8 years even though they "look" like new and have 3/4th's of the tread still on them. I would suggest your friend have them recycled vs. running them on any car. Blow out's simply aren't worth it.
