Cost to rechrome Cragars

I recently ran across some 15X6 Cragar wheels that have some sentimental value. Problem is some of the chrome is flaking off.

Does anyone know the going rate to rechrome a pair of wheels?

I would rather not buy new, but if rechroming costs more, the sentimental value is not that much.

Red face Re: Cost to rechrome Cragars

Regular 'steel' wheels and most parts are a day-at-the-beach to chrome at any shop using dual- catalyst and a hexa-valent chromium ... BUT, Cragar's are a r-e-a-l b1tch
The cast centers require special care, Cragar originally used a trivalent chromium and a triple- catalyst chrome with a "high-Throw" bath process and tecniques to get the chrome to throw evenly.
Now it is usually considered best to disassemble them (grind out welds and press apart), clean and chrome, then reassemble to 'true' and re-weld.
The cost will easily run well over $200 a wheel - and they will most likely not give you any guaranty on staying true or the chrome lasting ...

There are some specialty shops that have 'spray' chrome processes that may be able to give you a finish nice enough to live with depending on your use, but I don't know of anyone near you to recommend right off the top of my head.
Here is the process -
Here is another video -
Go to a couple of paint shops and ask around about it near you.

Re: Cost to rechrome Cragars

I would think it will cost more to strip and chrome them than they are worth.

Re: Cost to rechrome Cragars

What about sand blasting and powder coating them?
I have a set of 14" cragar rims that are peeling as well. I thought about powder coating them if I could squeeze disc brakes into them

Sand blasting will not remove any chrome that remains securely attached. If you can get all the chrome off then powder coating might be a viable option. The do make a powder coat "color" that is supposed to look like chrome, or you could go with a color of your choice.
