What original tires??

Ok Ive searched this site and CRG, to no avail. Now I must ask. Ive got an original L34 car, FINALLY (was beginning to think they didnt exist) found a 1968 Oct dated set of XT coded wheels and now I need to know what tires originally came on that car. Its got a build date of 11A making it an early car with no X code. It was my dads car that he got in 1972, and I have the bill of sale when he got it. No POP or Original motor though. Have some pics, so I know its real. So I need to know what Tires came on it originally?? Any help, Id appreciate. If anybodies in the panhandle of FL and wants to meet for a cruise or to talk or to see the car, PM me. Thanks guys!!

Re: What original tires??

The standard SS tire was a bias-ply RWL F70 x 14. Optional were red or white stripes. Around April '69 tires with fiberglass belts ['Polyglas'] became available as RWL, white or red stripe. Don't know about the others but RWL brands were Goodyear Wide Tread GT, Firestone Wide Oval and Uniroyal Tiger Paw.

Without factory paperwork there is no way to know if the car was built with optional tires. And if it had the standard SS tire, it could have been any one of the three brands.

Only the Goodyear F70-14 WTGT is available in repro. I believe they also offer Polyglas but your car was built before they were available.

Re: What original tires??

The way I understand it your car would have come with the same F70x14 RWL tires all RPO Z27 cars came with unless RPO PW7 (F70x14 white stripe), PW8 (F70x14 red stripe) or for an additional charge PY4 or PY5 (fiberglass belted) were ordered.

Re: What original tires??

ive checked ricks first gen, and the only tire available says polyglas on it. Since I will be driving the car, will that work? I want original, and will pay for it, but will those aftermarket tires work??

Re: What original tires??

Would they be firestone tires or goodyear tires?

Re: What original tires??

There is only one repro tire that would be considered correct for your car-Goodyear Wide Tread GT. They also reproduce the Goodyear Polyglas which would not be correct. There were 2 versions of the wide tread-"Goodyear Wide Tread GT" and Goodyear Wide Tread F70 x 14" Both versions were used; the latter is seen on the March '69 Motor Trend SS test car and the May '69 Car Life SS test car, which had a ducted hood. Maybe both were used; maybe it was early/late. Don't know.

The Firestone repro is not correct for at least most of '69. OE Firestones had much smaller lettering. However a recently discovered photo of a '69 Camaro SS pacing a late '69 NASCAR race shows the later Firestone.

Re: What original tires??

All goodyear tires say polyglas on them for reproductions. I am still uneasy about what tires to buy... I need a pic from late 68 showing an SS in dog dishes...

Re: What original tires??

Ok I tend to forget that no one person knows it all and if GM ran out of RWL they put whatever is available on it, be it redlines or uniroyal tires. Spoke to a very knowlegable individual, and I have made my choice. thanks guys!

Not true. WTGTs are available. They push the Polyglas because they had to re-tool it.
