69 Camaro with Rally Wheels

I just bought Rally wheels for the back of my 69 15 x 8 with 4.25" back spacing. What size tire will fit with this combo?

Will a 255/16-15?

Thanks, in advance for the help.

The car does have 2" Detroit speed lowering springs.

Re: 69 Camaro with Rally Wheels

With the 2" drop you are going to have problems with almost any tire on 15x8" w/4.25 bs wheels.

A 15x7" w/ 4.25" bs is a more usable wheel and probably the most commonly used. A 235/60 will fit with the 2" drop but a 255/60 will be rubbing on the fender lip. The 15x8" with the same back spacing adds 1" to the visual (fender) side of the wheel, you'll need to jack up the rear of the car....

Re: 69 Camaro with Rally Wheels

Can you return or exchange the rims? I have 15x8 rally's with a 5" BS on my 69 and am using 255/60-15 tires. I have the Hotchkis 1.5" drop leaf springs and everything fits nice with no rubbing or clearance issues. I was also able to re-use the trim ring from my 15x7 wheel on the 15x8 too.

Re: 69 Camaro with Rally Wheels

Thanks guys, The place that sold me the rims told me these rims will fit with a 255-60-15 but now I am not so sure I believe him. Makes me scared to mount tires on them. I am afraid if I mount tires on them and dismount he wont want to take them back

Just mount a bare wheel carefully to the rear axle and use a straight edge (24" level works well) across the wheel from rim to rim and up to the fender lip. Remember 60 series sidewalls bulge out from the wheel and 255's will buldge more than 235's.

Re: 69 Camaro with Rally Wheels

If you mount tires on the rims they won't take them back, at least that's Wheel Vintiques policy. I did what Dennis suggested with my 5" BS wheels, carefully mounting them without tires. I then used a 1x4 turned sideways as my straight edge giving me 3/4" beyond the edge of the wheel. Pushing that beyond the wheel diameter up into the wheel well gave me an indication as to whether I had clearance or not. A 255 tire will bulge 1/2" beyond the edge of the rim, so if the 1x4 fit I was going to be safe.

Re: 69 Camaro with Rally Wheels

I have 15x8 on all 4's with 245-60 on the rear and 225-60 on the front with stock height and have no rubbing issues on my 69. The rears fit inside the wells with no problem with a load. The problem will be with the fronts when you drop it. Put 7's on the front.

What's your back spacing?

Wouldn't 15x8 4.5 backspace work? That's what I have w/255/60 15, but mine's not lowered so I can't say for sure,but I think you'd be O.K.

Re: 69 Camaro with Rally Wheels

The rally wheels I have on my 69 are GM off a 77 Carvette that I bought from the guy in 1979. . . .so whatever stock 15 X 8 Vette wheels are.

Re: 69 Camaro with Rally Wheels

Thanks for all the input guys. I returned the wheels - FYI 15 x 8 with 4.25 back spacing would not fit my car, no way no how! My car is all original sheet metal. orig rear end housing, never hit.

Hope this helps some one else.
