17x8 or 17x9.5 wheels to use with 275 tires on 67?

I want to get new wheels and tires for my 67. It has Hotchkis 1.5" drop leafs in the rear. I have looked at the sticky post and see that most people are using 17x9.5 with 5.5 back spacing. I called a shop to get wheels and tires and they said I should use 17x8 with 4.5 back spacing. Which would work and look better? I am planning to buy American Racing Torque Thrust II wheels.

Wheel and tire stores will typically recomend what they have in stock and they don't stock custom sizes. A 275/40/17 is recomended for a 9" - 11" wide wheel. It will most likely fit on an 8" wheel but the sidewall will not work as designed.

Yeah, be careful with wheel companies, if they dont have the size you want the smart (shady) sellers will tell you another size is better. Im running 9 inch wide in the rear with 275. If I could do it over I'd run a 9.5 or a 10.

The size they quoted you is fine for a 235, not a 275. I don't even know if you could get the bead to seat right with a low profile 275 on an 8" rim.

Thanks guys. I will keep looking for another dealer. If anyone know of someone that sells Torque Thrust II at a good discount please let me know. I want 17x9.5 for the rear and 17x8 for the front.

Matt, do you mind sharing where you got the wheels? Also, what size wheels do you run on the front?

Matt. are you sure about the rear size 275/45/17 ? I can't find anyone making that size.

How much room to the inner fender do you have with the 5.5 inch backspace? Would 5.75 inch backspace be better?

Thanks.
Mike

Sounds about right. I have been researching wheels/tires myself. Try SFX performance. They have the best prices I have seen, but sometimes specific sizes/backspacings will require special ordering, which tacks on $300-$450 to the cost.

American racing doesn't have 17x9.5 with a 5.5" backspacing, unless you special order it as I mentioned above. This increases the price $like $100/wheel.
Found these.

Just my opinion I would look at vantage wheel works and get better looking wheel and I think you will spend less. Everything on the street has TT II or knock off of it. Kinda boring looking.

Re: 17x8 or 17x9.5 wheels to use with 275 tires on 67?

i just bought the custom 17 by 9.5 with the 5.5 b.s. mine fits but i have about an inch between inner tire and inner fender. i have a 2nd gen rearend under my car. 2nd gen rearends are one inch wider than 1st gens. i may end up going with a 6.5 inch back spacing and use a 1/4 or 1/2 spacer. as with most camaros my driverside wheel sticks out about a 1/4 to 3/8 futher than the passengerside. i really think a 285 would fit under there with the proper back spacing. i am running the hotchkis tvs and i have about the same rear fender gap as you do. i think mine will settle a little after i drive it. only one wheel came in so i cain t drive it yet. yours looks pretty good by the way. i did roll my rear fender lips. if it rubs on the driverside i may have to order just one wheel with the correct offset for the driverside. if it does not workout i can always just put them on my 71 camaro as that is what they run. so for all yaw running 2nd gen rearends you will need to run a 6 to 6 1/4 inch back space.

Ron, can you tell us what you ended up buying? I think it looks really good and would be interested in something similar. What type of rims did you end up with, sizes, backspace, etc. Also tire size would be helpful.

Thanks,

Jeff
