14" American made whitewalls

Time to re-tire my stock '69. The current Michelins are date coded from 2000. It originally (and currently) had whitewall tires - so I'd like to keep that look.

Other than the Coker repos that are a fortune - I've had a hell of a time finding American made 14" WSW tires. I've only found Uniroyal Tiger Paws and Cooper Trendsetters in 215/70-14

Anyone have any experience with either one?

Re: 14" American made whitewalls

I am using Korean Hankook Milage Plus H725 whitewalls in a 215/70R14. I know you wanted US tires, but these are pretty decent. They were a Consumer Reports "best buy" a few years ago. Hankook is partly owned by Michelin, and they supply a lot of OE tires these days. I think I read that this tire is being discontinued this year, but you may be able to find some. I think they are probably a better tire than the Uniroyals (which may not be US made anymore) and the Cooper trendsetters.

I did notice the Hankooks are OE tire on VW's this year. I'll look into those as well. I think Uniroyal is also owned by Michelin - they would not confirm the Tiger Paws are made in the US.

Re: 14" American made whitewalls

Good luck. There are not many of us still in the market for whitewalls. I know when I bought mine a few years back, it was getting very hard to find a quality 14" whitewall tire. For whatever reason, it seems like only the cheapie bargain basement tires are including whitewalls lately.

My Dad just tried to find some white letter 225/70R14 tires for his Chevelle. Even these are getting scarce.

BFG, Cooper Cobra, and Futura Pep Boys tires seem to be the only ones left in white letter 14" radials. He wanted the Firestone Firehawks, but they were discontinued earlier this year.

Re: 14" American made whitewalls

As others have said, they're going to be tough to find. You can also look for 205/75/14 if you want a little more of an original 'skinny' look.
A while back I bought up the last 6 205/75/14 Michelin Symmetry narrow whitewall tires from TireRack. I'm glad I did.

Hankook has a new tire line - Optimo H724 with the correct tire size. Just got confirmation from Cooper that the Trendsetter is made in the USA, I'll give them a try - Summit has them

Re: 14" American made whitewalls

Tom P.... A comment on the trendsetters...

When I was researching whitewalls in 2009, it seemed like the tread width on the trendsetters was very narrow for the tiresize. Just a word of caution.

Also, they used to make the Firestone FR380 in a whitewall. Very clean looking sidewall without serrations, block letters, etc, and maybe made in the USA? They also ran narrow from what I recall. These may have been discontinued?

I'm pretty happy with the Hankooks I ended up buying. Using them on a '65 Nova w/ 14x5 and 185/75R14 up front, 14x6 w/ 215/70R14 out back. Trendsetters and FR380s were next on my list.

Best of luck with whatever you choose.. just good to see someone else shopping for 14" whitewalls in the era of 18" wheels and blackwalls on everything!

Re: 14" American made whitewalls

I am re-thinking the Coopers. I spent some time searching for recalls, tread separation, lawsuits etc and turned up some past history that is scary. This is from 2000, but there is recent history of recalls

Several Cooper Tire models are facing public scrutiny for their possible role in dozens of fatal automobile accidents. According to reports, Cooper tires may develop shoulder area cracks which can cause tread separation leading to a sudden deflation of the tire. Similar to what caused the Firestone tire scandal, this defect may lead to serious injury or death if an accident ensues. To date, Cooper tires have been linked to 35 fatalities on U.S. highways. The billion-dollar tire maker is facing numerous lawsuits as a result.

During an Arkansas negligence lawsuit in the summer of 2000, several former Cooper Tire and Rubber Company employees alleged careless manufacturing procedures existed at the company's Texarkana and Tupelo, Mississippi plants. According to testimony, cans, plastic and chicken bones were often baked into the tires.

I have not found anything negative on the Hankooks as far as recalls or tread separation issues

One time is one time too many - yikes chicken bones and cans in the same sidewalls?

Looks good! Seems like the changed the sidewall a bit from the H725s. The "Hankook" lettering on my H725 is much smaller. I guess we can't be too picky these days, given the limited selection. I like the whitewalls on the Hankook - nice thin stripe and very white. I don't know about your experience with these Hankook tires, but mine took very little weight to balance on new, straight steel wheels. I was happy to see that.
