Can I Make It Work? 17x8" Issue

Since I got my car (68 Camaro with stock suspension) I have had some rubbing issues, during full suspension drop, on the front on the inside of the fender lips. Before buying new tires to rectify the problem I did some research here and this is what I found....

I have 17x8 fronts with 4" BS. So with my research the issue is my 4" BS. But I have 245 45"s on the front which is a pretty wide Tire.

My question is with 17x8"s with 4" BS can I use a 205 40 on the front and make it work? I actually like smaller tires on the front anyway will the 1.1" of extra radius and less width stop the rubbing? I assume that it will but with the BS I don't know for sure.

Anyone have experience making a stock 68 work with 17x8 fronts with 4" Back Spacing?

Re: Can I Make It Work? 17x8" Issue

Anybody have any thoughts on if it will work? What is the true gaining on putting a tire that is 8.07" wide in place of a tire that is 9.64" wide on the same rim?

I was hoping the 1" radius drop would be enough as is but I don't want to spend $400 for nothing and i'm supposed tio be in a parade this weekend....

As bad as rubber has gotten, you might come out spending less money getting another set of front rims with 4.75" backspace. Never thought I'd see the day rims were cheaper than tires. Also you typically need a 4.25" backspace just to fit a 7" rim.

My gut says the 205 might not fix the issue and a 23.5" tire would look awful.

Re: Can I Make It Work? 17x8" Issue

Your 4" backspacing is really the issue here, just how bad are the 245/45's rubbing? Better shocks might help and then you can get button head Allen bolts to replace the upper most fender bolts and have some negative camber dialed into your alignment.

The 205/40 really shouldn't be put on a 8" wheel... The max recomended size is 7.5" so you can imagine the wheels rim is going to really be sticking out beyond the sidewall.

Then the 205/40 is only 23.5" tall, your 245/45 is 25.7" tall. Even though you will probably win the rubbing battle it's going to look rather out of place...

A 225/45 would fit nice on an 8" wheel, be 25" tall and .7 narrower in the section width. It is a little smaller all the way around but won't look out of place replacing a 245/45. Along with the tips I gave above I bet this would resolve your rubbing.

Re: Can I Make It Work? 17x8" Issue

Up here Rims are still way more than tires. I need to make these work.

I thought about the shocks but I really don't have time to replace them but will likely in the near future.

They are rubbing when I hit a deep bump and fairly evenly around the inside edge of the lip. If I can tuck them a little I think I can beat the rubbing but I need to make sure as I have no need for 2 tires so I can't try two sets.

My 2 cents. with a 23" tire your going to bend the rims anyway and have to replace them. If you run over any kind of edge at a moderate speed the rims are bent. I paid for this wisdom btw.

Re: Can I Make It Work? 17x8" Issue

How and why does that happen Don? It isn't an extremely low profile tire.

Re: Can I Make It Work? 17x8" Issue

This is my experience with 17x7 with 4" BS.(205/40/17 BFG KDW)
23.5-17 = 6.5/2 =3.25" The only way you get the full 3.5 is with about 40# of air. That will give you a lot of road feel.
I measure about 2.75 inches wheel edge to road @35#. I consider that a low profile.
I have have bent my second BS vintec wheel after hitting a shallow pothole.

Re: Can I Make It Work? 17x8" Issue

Ya have to remember the aspect ratio (sidewall) is 40% of the width. A 205/40 is 8.1" wide, that's a 3.24" sidewall. Even worse is you are stretching the sidewall and shortening the aspect ratio by mounting it on an 8" wide wheel.

Compare that to the 225/45 I suggested which has a relaxed 3.92" aspect ratio on an 8" wide wheel... You are looking at just about an inch of extra sidewall.

If you are really set on a 205 tire get a 205/50/17. You'll get the narrow tire you want with the same sidewall as the 225/45...
