Best 15" performance tires?

I'm planning on keeping my factory steel wheels on my 67. What's the best tires? Planning on using he car on street, but need something to hook up, when I decide to hammer down.

Re: Best 15" performance tires?

I have always used BF Goodrich tires on my 69. They have always served me well. When you make your choice, check out Tire Rack.com for the best pricing. Many manufacturers have discontinued 15'' tires from their offerings because none of the OEM's build cars supplied with 15'' rims anymore. Your choices may be limited. Good luck.

Gonna need to make a choice......

tires that last a while and are OK if you get caught in the rain

or

tires that won't last as long and get traction but are so-so if caught in the rain

I'm on the hunt for new tires for 15" rims. The Firehawks that are on there now and are history in 15". Not sure what I'm going to land up with now.

Depends what you mean by "performance"?

As Bobby suggests, if used on track his point makes sense. If used street, there are several out there, but the smaller wheels is starting to limit us with them, eh?

Have used the Firestone 500's for a year now ,and they've served me well. They corner OK, considering the higher profile, are quiet and do well in the rain. The tread pattern has been updated, unlike other standby brands that have not changed in years

Re: Best 15" performance tires?

I got the nitto 555 drag radials. The mickey Thompson and hoosier make a stickier tire but the tread life is less. I still can't hook but 3rd gear it does. I had 275-50's then changed to 275-60's the 60's gave a softer ride and hooked better.

Just saw some Firestone "Firehawks 500's" @ carid.com for $430 a set, in the 225/15" size, eh?

It's just too bad they don't make a front tire to match. A 225-245/60/15 would be a great match with that 275/60/15. Not that big if a deal for the drag strip, but on an Auto X or just for cruising, it would be great to have a matched set.

They do make an NT01 in a 225/50/15, but that's a little short for a 1st gen, and the tread pattern is different than the 555R.

Re: Best 15" performance tires?

I have to agree with you on that one the nitto tires are nice and I do have mismatched fronts. I like the smooth sidewall look to and all they have for tires now is that cross hatched look that is impossible to clean and polish.
