165R15 wheel size

I need your help. At a local used tire place I found a set of "used" 165R15s that are almost brand new. Still have some of the nubs on the tread and they aren't cracking. I want to know if putting these on my 15x7 ralleys is a good idea or bad. the best part is, $65 installed, and balanced.

Re: 165R15 wheel size

That's the size you typically see on a 4" wide wheel. I wouldn't do it!

165x_?_ R15

Fill in the ? 50, 60, etc... a 165x60x15 should not be put on a 7" wide wheel. It's 22.8" tall and 1st gen tires are usually 25" - 28" tall.

Re: 165R15 wheel size

165R15 is a metric tire, there is not aspect ratio. They are typically used on the back of old school VW's or for front runners on street/strip cars.

I have used them many times, I have them on the front of my Nova.

As far as rim size, I have run them on 3.5" to 5.5" wide rims. I don't think I would try them on a 7" rim.

Dennis they are taller than 22 or 23", I would have to go out and measure, but they are closer to 26 or 27" tall.

Re: 165R15 wheel size

This is the tire size he is talking about. This is an old picture of my Nova. The wheel is 15 X 4" Max I would go is 6" wheel. When I ran them on the back of my Cal Bug they were on 5.5" wheels.

Re: 165R15 wheel size

Here's a better angle and reference, these are 165's on my old Camaro (3.5" rim):

The rear tires are 26.5 or 27" tall for comparison.

Re: 165R15 wheel size

165R15 is a euro-metric and I hadn't considered the use when I posted earlier. Royce I said a 165x60x15 is 22.8" tall... Sorry for any confusion.

A 165R15 has an 82 series sidewall and is about the same size as 165x80x15 or a 205x60x15 which is about 24.7" tall and would fit on a 7" wheel.

Re: 165R15 wheel size

Dennis,

Yes, the 165's are about 25" tall (just a hair over 1/4"), just went out and measured them, that is on a 4" rim. If you stretch the tire out onto a 7" rim it will more than likely be a bit shorter. I have had the tires on 5.5" rims and the sidewall is pretty flat. The tread width is only a bit over 4.5" they are not going to look very good on a 7" wide rim. Recommended rim width is 4.5 to 6". The section width of the tire is only 6.5"

Every 165 I have had said "metric" on the side. I didn't even know they made a 165/60/15, where did you see those? That would be a decent tire for the front of the Buick

Re: 165R15 wheel size

Tire Rack show a Continental, it's a popular VW tire and I know Uniroyal and Goodyear make them but I think just for the European market.

Re: 165R15 wheel size

I used to use that size (VW tire) on a set of pizza cutter Center Lines (15 x 3-1/2) when I was drag racing.

I wouldn't put that on a 15 x 7 rim either.
