Wheel sizes for COPO/Tires and performance

Has anybody used the standard steel wheels for a COPO, and if so did you go 14x7 in front and 15x7 in the rear? Could you fit a 15x8 rim in a standard wheel well? Also do the polyglass tires hook up off the line with a standard 12 bolt multi-leaf rear end? Seems like they would just spin. Any suggestions on a good set of tires for general purpose driving and occasional street race?

Re: Wheel sizes for COPO/Tires and performance

Wheel vintiques makes the 14x7 steel wheels for the dog dish hub caps, if you use a 15x8 you need at least 4 1/2- 4 3/4 back space. The key to the polyglass tires is air pressure, I run 40lbs in the rear at the track, 32 on the street. The best we can get is1.8-1.9 60 foot times, if they spin they will not recover. The key is to soften the launch and not shock the tires, I run mono leafs on the Camaro with a stiff 50/50 rear shock. On the vette I run the f41 spring and clamp it in 2 spots on each side, for a total of 4 clamps, the vette IRS has a huge advantage in pure stock trim with the polyglass tires, btw, the Firestone wide oval is softer than than the Goodyear polyglass. Multi leaf springs will wheel hop unless you clamp them

Maybe this is a stupid question but I don't know much about copos, other than they came with a 427. I thought they came with 15 by 7 wheels, is that so or 15 in the back and 14 up front ?

Re: Wheel sizes for COPO/Tires and performance

standard COPO ws 14X7 steel wheel .

im not sure but if you wanted or ordered RALLEYS , then the 15 in would have been on them.
i dont believe they ever staggerd the wheels on the camaros back then ...if they did , I NEVER HEARD OF THAT BEFORE.

usually , once you bought the car , you drove it home , jacked it up and changed the wheels , put traction bars on , a tach , and some other various spped parts or chrome goodies ...they call those DAY TWO CARS ... cuse you did it on the second day you had the car...lol

I'm also looking to put the copo style wheel on my 67. Can someone point me in the right direction on where to find a 15" steel wheel that will work.

thank you

Re: Wheel sizes for COPO/Tires and performance

I know that the 67 YENKOs use a Pontiac ralley wheel !

as far as a 67 Copo , cant say i know how those were done or other than the dealer cars , IF they were .. Yenko , nickey , Burger , dana , so on .. you can look those up online and find various pictures.

in 67 , the disc brake set up would have been the 4 piston calipers , i think there was a 14x5 that cleared them but that might have just been in the rally wheels.

i saw recently someone posted in one of the topics on wheels a LIST or all the codes and applications n what year they came on.

do a search on the site for wheel codes ?
hope that helps

Re: Wheel sizes for COPO/Tires and performance

I'm pretty sure all factory COPO's came with 14x7 wheels. If you wanted 15x7 wheels you had to order COPO 9737 (I think) in addition to the COPO 9561 for the iron block 427 or 9560 if you wanted a ZL1. This extra COPO code also got you a 140 mph speedometer. All the 15x7 wheels in the 9737 COPO package I think were the rally type.
