Since you are running the same all the way around I'd suggest the 235/45 17 it is .7" taller than the 245/40, is .5" narrower (section width) and the tread is only .3" less than the 245. You could even run the 255/45 or 255/40 in the rear and the 235/45 up front if you wanted the staggered width.
The problem with the 245/40 front and back is it's as wide as you can put in front and kinda small for the back which will make the car look lopsided IMO. The 235/45 will give you a little wiggle room in front (still may have some light scuffing) and that helps the tire not look too small for the rear.
If you have a good alignment, keep the tire pressure up and the suspension is in good shape you should be able to run staggered sizes and not worry about uneven wear. I've been running 255/45 and 235/45 for years and 25k+ miles without uneven wear issues...
