Question YJ 14x7 wheels, 1995 produced?

Hello,

I have a 1969 Caprice with 14x7 YJ Rally Wheels. I know these did not originally come on this car. I was washing the Caprice today and finally decided to copy down the date codes on these wheels.

Two are date coded as follows:
K195 (stem) 1 12 YJ

One is date coded as follows:
9 (stem) 5 YJ

The last is date coded as follows:
9 and 5 are stamped on top of each other (stem)18 YJ

I am assuming all of these are 1995 over the counter replacement wheels? In all of the threads I have been reading today about YJ wheels, I have not seen any examples like the last two wheels listed above. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Mike

Re: YJ 14x7 wheels, 1995 produced?

From what I can gather...

K - Kelsey-Hayes designation
1 - Romulus, MI plant
9 - Year (1969)
5 - Month (May)
(stem)
1 12 - *** Not sure, I thought day of month was here.
YJ - 14X7 BS - 4 3/8, '69 Camaro/ Chevy II L72 - ZL1, '70 Nova

No I am pretty sure the 95 stands for 1995.

You really think they were making over the counter rally wheels in 1995? The info on how to read these codes is all over the internet on almost every GM forum board you can find.

Perhaps they are truck wheels from the '90s if they reused the codes and changed meaning of everything. They had trim rings and center caps but looked nothing like vintage rallys... But then again they wouldn't be 14" wheels either!

Re: YJ 14x7 wheels, 1995 produced?

Dennis is right on the format
K - manufacturer (Kelsey-Hayes)
1 - manufacturing plant (Romulus, MI)
Y - last digit of year
M - one or two digit month (1 thorugh 12) for month of year
D - one or two digit day (1 through 31) of month

But many examples exist where the plant and the year were reversed, or the year stamped below the line the rest of the stampings follow. See the attached example of a service replacement Corvette wheel from 1975.

Service stamps were upside down and read with the stem at the top not bottom, they also have a paper sticker on the inside of the rim with full date of manufacturing. And the year is a matched set of stamps not individual parts.

Mike drop a few pictures of the stamps you have.

I finally took photos of each code stamp on my rally wheels. I defer to the "experts" out there to tell me when these were manufactured.

Mike - IMHO you have three service replacements K195 stamped so you read it with the valve stem at the TOP of the wheel and one factory assembly line issued with the stamp so you read it with the valve stem at the BOTTOM of the wheel.

On service replacements the date code is underlined and followed by a code. I will have to dig for the database that has the codes, I know there was a number for Chevrolet dealers as over the counter parts and think that was 5, and one for GM warranty replacements, think that was 3 or 1, and another for parts stores. When Fruehauf Trailer purchased Kelsey-Hayes in 72-73 the code stamping format was changed yet again.

YJ's in 1969 were used on Camaro SS and Chevy II (aka Nova) 14 inch applications.

And they look nice on your Caprice.

Brian,

I appreciate your input on my question. If you can determine when these were manufactured, I would appreciate it!

Re: YJ 14x7 wheels, 1995 produced?

Sure 2 of the service replacements were assembled on April 12th, 1969. One on June 19, 1969 and that is the one that rolled out the assembly plant door on a new SS Camaro or Chevy Nova II that ordered the RPO Rally SS Rims, and the other service counter one was assembled on September 5th 1969.

If you ever dismount the tires on these wheels on the inside rim is the date the rim was cast. The stamped date by the valve stem is the assembly date of the whole final product, which was normally the same day.

Of course the real question is when these wheels found their way to your Caprice. The fact that two are a matches set leads me to think someone found one factory and bough the three others at a dealership, two having matched dates maybe were special ordered.

How long have you owned the vehicle?

Re: YJ 14x7 wheels, 1995 produced?

I bought the Caprice last August in Atlanta. The guy I purchased it from says the car had the original 14" steel wheels and dish hubcaps and the rally wheels and tires came from a Corvette he owned. It is amazing that two of the wheels that started life together are still paired with each other.
Brian, thanks for your input.

Re: YJ 14x7 wheels, 1995 produced?

Well if April 12th was the day they made YJ's for counter service and the warehouse had them you got two. I'm dubious on the former owners statement that they were on his Vette. Not factory. Corvettes in 69 were AZ code not YJ.

The previous owner never stated these rally wheels were original to his Corvette, just that they were mounted on it. Maybe he bought them from someone on Craigslist. I don't know.

Yes they made service replacement YJ wheels as late as 1995!!! I have seen 1989, 1991, 1992 stamped YJ wheels. Your first 2 pictured wheels were made in April 12, 1995 - the K195 indicates that.
