A true 4.88 gear

I have a 69 camaro and was trying to figure gear ratio to race car. 358 small block, turbo 350 trans 5500 stall conv. 14/32/15 slicks. what is the true gear ratio of a 4.88 gear with 32 in slick 456, 411 or what ?

Re: A true 4.88 gear

What I think you are asking is a street tire is roughly 26 inches tall so by going to 32 inch slick in effect reduces your final gear ratio. My calculations suggest it would be like running a 3:58 gear with a 26 inch tire. The experts I am sure will responsed as well and more than likely have better insights into the true ratio then myself.

4.88 is 4.88 no matter what size tire you use. The tire will turn once for each 4.88 turns of the input shaft. You can use one of the many online calculators to see what difference changing tire sizes and gear ratios will make.

Re: A true 4.88 gear

Easy calculation to make comparisons:

(MPH) X rear gear ratio X 336 / tire height

Example:

60 X 4.56 X 336 / 28 = 3283 rpm

60 X 4.88 X 336 / 28 = 3513 rpm

In your case:

60 X 4.88 X 336 / 32 = 3074 rpm

As a comparison:

60 X 4.10 X 336 / 28 = 2952 rpm

Your 4.88 with a 32" tire is the rough equivalent of a 4.10 gear with a 28" tire.

Hope that helps.
