Staggered Wheels 18/17

Im thinking about making the move away from my current 15" wheels to something larger. I was planning on going to 17" but cant find the size tire for the rear to get me to 27". 285/40/17 is 26".
I can get to the 27" height by going with an 18" wheel and a 285/40/18 tire.

What in the consensus on staggered wheel sizes?

In my case, 27" rear height is gonna work better for my current gearing and will fill up the wheel opening better that 26"

Im looking at the Circle Racing Billet Ralleys....

Thanks for the response!

Re: Staggered Wheels 18/17

The tires are BFG Sport Comps. 225/45 front and 255/40 rear. 4.5" backspace on the 7 inch fronts, I have front disk brakes. 4" back spacing on the 9" rears. The rear backspacing works because I have a differential out of a 67 Nova which is 1 1/8" narrower on each side. Even with the Hotchkis lowering springs front and back, I have absolutely no rubbing.ause

Re: Staggered Wheels 18/17

Agreed....! I realize that all cars are different when it comes to the measurements of what sized fits. However, each car has the same general body lines and curves. I was just kinda looking for feedback on the "staggered look" itself from either those who have gone that route or others in with the same Camaro fetish.... Trying to pick wheels/tires and making that work with available tire sizes is a PITA...

Trying to decide between 18" rear, 27" height overall or 17" rear, 26" overall....

I like the staggered look because it keeps the sidewalls about the same height.

Re: Staggered Wheels 18/17

If you want to stay away from rubbing, stick with 255 in back and 225 in front.

It's possible to go a little bigger, but you might have lots of headaches.

I just bought 17 X 8 wheels with 4.5" backspace. 225/45/17 front and 255/45/17 rear.

I've slightly lowered the front and plan on de-arching the rear springs 2".

Re: Staggered Wheels 18/17

I like a little more side wall so I don't get away from the original muscle car look as is with the rubber band rubber look. I would keep all 17's and use a taller side wall and less width, which the wide look can be achieved with the wheel. Take a look at a 50 series tires you will loose about 3/4" in width and pick it up in the height. 27 inch tall is a bit too tall in my opinion. I just measured one of my 69's with "too big a tire" look and it is 26" tall, 255 x 60 on 7" rally wheels. Keep it looking like a 60's muscle car the way they were designed, not like a sissy Corvette wheel look with the rubber band look. . . I have one of those too! Just an old guy talkin.

Re: Staggered Wheels 18/17

Personally, I like the same diameter front and rear, so I'd go with 17's or 18's on both, however a 1" stagger doesn't look bad at all. I run a 245/40/18 (25.7") up front with a 275/40/18 (26.7") rear.

Tire/wheel choice is a personal decision. Ask a dozen people and you'll probably get a dozen different opinions.
