You're right on for back spacing but it's really optimal for disc brake cars. I don't recall exactly but the hub surface is about 1/4" different in the rear. You might squeeze 275/40's back there but the 275/50's are about 1/10" wider but are about 2 1/2" taller and may pose a problem. I've always got a full car load of people and am very happy with 255/45/17 on 9 1/2" with 5 1/2" BS on a drumb brake. The wheel will move out about 1/4" when I convert to disc and I should have clearence without rolling the fender lip. I could have run the 275's if I rolled the lip...
