When I bought my car it had 15" x 7" rim with 4.5" backspacing, with Mickey Thompson Indy Profile H50-15 which is a 295/50-15 with a 10" thread width and 26" diameter!
Outer fenders lips were bent in slightly to allow this to fit. It did fit but rubbed a bit when people were in the back seat. I have since put 255/60R15 dunlops for now until I go 17"
So I would say you can go 9" comfortably with 15x7 (4.5" backspacing)
