i'm planning on doing a minor mini tub pretty soon, when I say minor i mean only shock relocation and moving the stock tubs in 3 inches, i don't want to fab the whole rear suspension. What I've read is that the stock set up can only take a 275 40 17 with the proper back spacing. What clearance do you guy's (those running a 275) have between the rear of tire to the rear of the leaf spring, i currently have about 2.5 inches of clearance and am running a 245 on a 16x8. i just want to be able to run a 295 on a 10in rim. thanks for any replies

Here are the approx. widths of the tires:

245 mm = 9.6"
275 mm = 10.8"
295 mm = 11.6"

You are looking to gain 2" on the conversion you are doing for 245 -> 295 and you currently have 2.5" clearance, so you shouldn't have a problem as long as you have the proper back spacing on your wheels.

I've got 275s on right now and am mini-tubbing, also. I've got plenty of clearance inside with the 275s, but my tires can rub on the fender lip if I hit a good bump. I'm wanting to put on 315s or 335s when I'm done. To do this I need to move the springs in, though.

I'd have to put the springs back on and measure, but I think it was something like 1.5-1.75", but I have no idea of the back spacing on the wheels. I've got a new Moser 12 bolt I'll be putting in, so I have parts and pieces laying around the garage. I just came in for lunch, but I got the passenger's side fenderwell cut out! [img]smile.gif[/img]

Please remember a '67 car came stock with a 14" x 6" steel rim with 3.75" b/s..

FOR THE FRONT;

A wheel that sticks out 1.25" farther out towards the outside of the car on the front will more than likely rub the wheel well chrome moulding with a tire that is flat to the rim's lip sidewall-wise!! I say this b/c my old, E/60's on 7" Fenton slotted mag's with 3.5" b/s did!!!

FOR THE REAR;

I have ran old L/60's on 14" x 9" fenton slotted mag's with 3.5" b/s on my rear but I had to raise my rearend up using coil-overs about 4"s or so to keep them from rubbing the outer wheel lip chrome..

The old L/60's measured a modern 298/53-14 so were by no stretch a 60 tire!!

YOU NEED TO WATCH THE LOWER SHOCK MOUNT b/s -wise when trying to run nonstock b/s rims unless your new rims allow for the lower shock mount to tuck inside the back of the rear of the rim!!

Does all this make since???

I am in the middle of performing a similar mini-tub on my '68. I wanted wider tires in the rear with the ability to lower the car down over them. Many people claim rear widths but at the sake of the tire barely fitting under the car and almost certainly rubbing. I went with a 285/40 17 on a 9.5 inch wheel with 6.5 inches of BS. This puts the tire about 1/8th inch from the spring. It's tight, but should work really well. I should be able to put the kids in the car without it rubbing.

On yesterday's "Two Guys Garage" they did the whole rear minitub and suspension changeover on their 68 Camaro. Perhaps you can catch the replays of it over the next few days.
