What wheels & tires on your '69?

I'm looking at a few '69 Camaros and I've always felt that while the car is definitely the main statement, the wheels and stance can make or break the presentation. I'm no longer active in the drag race scene, I gave that up a long time ago, and I'm not really into the autocross scene either. I'm a cruiser... I go to cruise nights and local shows and local GTGs with performance car friends.

There seems to be three (3) schools of thought when it comes to Gen1 Camaros and to 1969 models; you go with pure OEM rally wheels, you go with the "Musclecar" wheels (usually 15"), or you go with the "Pro-Touring" look (usually 17"-18"). At this point I'm leaning towards the "Musclecar" look, but have to admit some of the pro-touring Camaros are really nice.

Musclecar wheels can be classic Cragar SS's, American Racing TT's, or even some modded wide Rally wheels. Wheel Vintique makes 15" rally wheels in a variety of widths... I looked at one Camaro that had special order 8.5" wide WV rims on the back (see pix). The owner said that he thought it was the widest street setup possible with stock suspension. BTW, he used Corvette rally rings on the back but said the powder coating seemed so thick the rings had a hard time going on.

So I'm curious as to what you're running on your '69's and lets limit it to those with mostly stock suspension. No mini-tubs, no 4-links, no narrowed axles. If you don't mind posting a picture, include the brand of rim and size/backspace specs, plus the size/brand of the tires. I'm also curious about the fronts as far as how wide the tire and rim can be without rubbing, but the back is the problem area I think.

Re: What wheels & tires on your '69?

I'm at the tail end of my resto, so I don't have any current wheel/tire combo pics. This is how it looked when I started the tear down and how it will look when I'm done. These are 15" ET IV wheels with GR70-15 tires. Same as Ansen Sprint wheels. I actually have two Ansen Sprints as well now and they're just about identical.

Re: What wheels & tires on your '69?

I went closer to what they might have run back in the day. A lot of folks don't like the 16" wheels but I don't like the big hoops and rubber band tires on our cars. These tire widths combined with wheel back-space will work on just about diameter wheel.

Front 16 x 7 w/ 4" backspace 225/55 tires
Rear 16 x 8 w/ 4-3/4 backspace 255/50 tires

Andy...

That looks just great! Actually a nice compromise. What rims are those? I have to assume that you've done some lowering right? Can you elaborate? I kind of agree with you on the cars I've seen running 18's 19's and 20's. How much more space is there in the back? Reason I ask is I wondered if a slightly fatter 265/50 would fit back there.

Re: What wheels & tires on your '69?

Those are Torque Thrust II wheels. The front springs are the Hotchkis 2" drop coils and the rear leafs in the pictures were some de-arched 4-leaf units that were pretty low. I now have 3" drop Detriot Speed 4-leaf units which actually raised up the rear to a more level stance.

There are few options in tires for the 16" wheels which is a reason a lot of folks choose the 17" size. I am running BF Goodrich G-Force Sport tires in the sizes mentioned above. You could probably sneak in a 265 width rear tire without rubbing but don't know if they offer 265. If I excessively twist the suspension I might rub a rear tire on the rear frame rail, but that is only on a very unlevel surface such as a driveway with a quick slope in a sharp turn.

Make your decision of which tires you want to run before buying wheels. If you cannot match your choice of tires to the 16" rims you might choose the 17" size instead.

Re: What wheels & tires on your '69?

I still have my stock rally wheels with 245/60 all round. But as I went to several meets I saw much chrome TT or large wheels that really seem to rub fender wells etc.

I went with a set of 16 x 7 x 4.250 bs on front and 17x8x 3.50 bs. Front rubber was 245/60 while rear is 255/17/50. All rubber is Gforce SportComp thread.

At stock events I go back to my stock rally wheels but for long cruises I go with the optionals.

Not sure if these attachments show up.

Love the stance of your Z Nick. Torq thrust or rallys it looks like it sits just right.

Re: What wheels & tires on your '69?

After trying a lot of wheels setups I now have two that I choose between. I really didn't want the so common Rally Wheels and the TT II, the look great but I wanted something more personal. So I went for these below.
The car has Hotchkis Sport Leaf with 2,5" drop in rear and stiff sport springs with 2" drop in front.

First a daily driving set....a modern version of the classic American Racing wheel that were introduced in 1969, the 200S. Itīs easier to find the tires in 17" and they were also the size that could be special ordered from AR. I measured my specific car, they really are individuals, and came to these BS figures.
The front wheels are 17x8", BS 4,75" and with Kuhmo Ecsta 225/50 and the rear wheels are 17x9,5", BS 5,75" with Kuhmo Ecsta 255/50.

Iīve special made a set of original 14" steel wheels with dog dish, 14x6 for disc brakes in front and 14x7 in rear for car events and shows. Reproduced Good Year Polyglas F70-14 in front and a set of former NOS Polyglas H70-14 in rear to get that mean muscle car look! This Is what I call the Old School Pro Touring!

Re: What wheels & tires on your '69?

These are GM 15x7 rallies with BF Goodrich P215/65-15s. Ignore the saggy front end. I just replaced the old springs with new Moog 638s and they raised the front of the car about 3/4".

Go to the very bottom left of any screen. You'll see a drop down. Select, "Classic" view. All I saw was show attachments too even on the classic view.

You are correct, I have tried several times to select photo from my storage and post. All I get is attachment thumbnails.

Maybe Click will chime in or one of the other grus.
