Original spare?

Would this be the original spare? I've had the bias ply with yellow writing on the tread of the tire but have never seen this?Click image for larger version

Re: Original spare?

You can check the code on the tire using this chart, but it is likely a replacement tire.

The only reason someone would want insurance is if they want to pay someone elses bills or want someone else to pay their bills.

Re: Original spare?

The L is 1968, the S is April. The rest identifies what plant produced it and other information that is not yet understood. If you can show a picture of the numbers and letters stamped in the area on both sides of the rubber valve stem, we might be able to tell you when the rim was made. It may turn out that tire actually was an original on your car.

Re: Original spare?

Thank you John. It is an 04D VN Z/28.
I will take some pics in the sunlight tomorrow.
Seeing the chart you posted, I think it is the original.

I will post those pics tomorrow-thanks again.

Re: Original spare?

68 Z28 15x6 rim huh. Those wheels didn't have dates on the face. Looks like you're good to go there.

Re: Original spare?

DF rims of that vintage did not have dates by the valve stem. The dates are stamped inside the rim. Most likely your original spare.

Re: Original spare?

Cool-I value your opinions, thank you. This thing is a time capsule.

I need 4.....well actually 9 DF wheels, none of these had external date codes?

Re: Original spare?

I think they started putting the dates by the valve stem hole on the DF wheels in June 68 and later. You will want the upside down DF's. Those are typically Jan 67 to March 68 wheels and are all dated on the inside with the month and year from what I have seen. I have had quite a few DF wheels.
The size of the slots in the ralleys went through a few different changes over time.
If I recall the upside down DF's are the same slot size then the June 68 and on are smaller. You will also see quite a few 69 dated replacement DF wheels (with date by valve stem) which are the least desirable.
