15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

Ive been poking around various forums for a few days now. TONS of info on what guys are running, so Ive narrowed it down and just about ready to order rally wheels/tires. At the risk of repeating whats been said in other forums, I wanted to bounce my plan off you guys, as I cant find my exact scenario:

68 Coupe; front disk conversion; lowered one coil in front (cut); drums in back

Advice from local restoration shop:

Front:
4.25 backspace
15x7
235/50

Back:
4.5 backspace
15x8
255/60

I see most guys seem to run 225-235/60 on front vs /50. Wondering why shop owner would recommend /50. Because of the cut coil? Hopefully its an obvious answer to you guys...Im just not sure on the basics!

Any and all thoughts/advice is appreciated.

Thx.

Don't know if this will help, or confuse you, but does your front conversion push the wheel out, or are the hubs in the original location? This may be of concern. A 50 is a shorter tire. My car is stock, and I have 7 inch all around with 235-60-15. No rubbing what so ever. With the round wheel wells, you may get away with a slightly larger tire than a 69. Hope I didn't just confuse you.

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

When I ran 235/60/15s in front, I had a slight rub on the outer fender lip with 4.25" BS. 225/60/15s are perfect for my set up. I'm not sure how the recommended 50 series would work.

I run 15X8s with 4.5" BS in the back with 245/60/15s. No rubs and I could probably go with a 255 in back.
Pics in my garage.

EDIT...Here is a comparison of specs on a 235/60 vs. 235/50

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

I have a pair of 15X8's 5' backspace with 255X60 BFG's on my 68 convertible. https://www.jegs.com/i/Wheel-Vintiqu...83405/10002/-1
They are mounted on the car and appear to have sufficient clearance inside and out. Unfortunately I haven't driven it since mounting them in January as I decided to tear apart the engine bay for some detail work and have been distracted with other projects all summer....

135s 5.33 tread width will not ever rub. Did you mean 235s?

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

I run 235/17R45s on 17x9 rims on my 68. Haven't had a problem with tire clearance. These are actually about a quarter inch shorter than stock, so I recommend you check actual tire height rather than just width....

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

@X-77 - You bring up a great point...my conversion kit (at least I think this is the one I used: https://www.classicindustries.com/pr...rts/bk03d.html) says it moves the wheels out 7/16.

Does will 4.25 backspacing be the best option for the front? Does it depend on if I choose /50 or /60?

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

Also wanted to verify Im measuring lug spacing correctly. I assumed I would be 5x4-3/4....BUT I think its actually 4-1/2:

Rear spacing looked the same:

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

That's not the way to measure. You have to measure around the arc. It is 4 3/4"

Remember the term is "bolt circle"

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

Got it Vega$. Thanks.

Any idea about how my front disc conversion will effect backspacing decision? I just realized I need to pick offset too. Ill start researching what that means for my setup.

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

If it helps, I also have a front disc conversion kit that pushes the hub out about 1/2". I'm running 15" X 7" with 4.25" BS up front. No rubs with 225/60/15" Radial TAs.

For reference, the measurement from the center of my front hub up (perpendicular to the ground) to the fender lip is 14".

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

More research tells me that since CPP disk conversion pushed the wheels out 7/16, I need to add backspace. Instead of 4.25 in front, Im thinking To go with 4.5. (I referenced 4.25 from a phone conversation where a local shop said, 4 to 4.25 on the front.)

(I think) the only outstanding issue left is deciding between 235/60 or 235/50 in the front. Since I chopped a coil out, not sure if /60s will end up rubbing. Ive heard a lot of guys say /60s fit their cars, but havent heard anyone comment on if theyll fit with the coil cut.

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

Ive reached out to a handful of restoration shops. Consensus is that /50s arent recommended on the front.

So:

FRONT:
15x7
BFG T/A 225/60R15
4.5 backspacing

REAR:
15x8
BFG T/A 255/60R15
4.5 backspacing

ISSUE: Ready to order tonight, but cant find exact tire/wheel combo as above. Coker doesnt offer Chevy/GM Rally wheel in 15x7 w/ 4.5 backspacing. They only offer 4.25 backspacing. (Will this rub with a disk conversion and 2 coil drop?)

ON THE OTHER HAND: Wheel Vintique offers Corvette Rally Wheels in specs mentioned above (4.5 bs on front and back). I think I can get this setup for $80 cheaper...but wont let that be a deciding factor if somehow the corvette wheels on a Camaro is unadvisable. (Is there a difference between Camaro and corvette wheels other than 14 vs 15?

Advice is much appreciated,

Boucher

Re: 15 Rally Wheels - Will they rub?

@Vega- Id like to stick with 15. Two reasons:

1) I like the more original look.
2) My head will EXPLODE if I jump into the 17 decision matrix. (Im new to the game in the sense that I cant immediately see a 14 vs 15 vs 16 vs 17 rim and have an immediate gut reaction to it. I lean towards original looking...but thats not to say some 17/18 set-ups dont look incredibly awesome. In my pea brain...15 is a good place to start, and 17/18 will be a possible upgrade in the future.)

Really, really, really appreciate the advice/thoughts and recommendations. Wife is out of town for another day so Id like (need!) to wrap this part of the project up ASAP. For now Id like to stick with 15 and hear thoughts on corvette style vs 4.25 bs up front.

Cheers- Boucher
