Tire, wheel, and axle set on DSE mini tubs

Looking for pics and specs of guys running mini tubs. Just installed mini tubs on my 67 RS and trying to figure rear tire/wheel set up and axle widths.

I searched all over the forums and couldnt find what I was looking for.

If this has been discussed already and someone could post a link I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Re: Tire, wheel, and axle set on DSE mini tubs

This is the order that I followed to determine what you asked.

1. Decide what type of rear suspension you want. Something has to fasten the axle to the car.

2. Determine what tire and wheel combination you like. Wheel offset is a big variable to determine axle length. Tire size needs to fit in the tub.

3. Determine what brakes you want to use. Rotor hat thickness will affect the axle length.

4. Have an axle built or build one yourself that has the correct length to fit the above wheels. The axle should have correct suspension mounting brackets.

I know this is an over simplification of the process.

For more details, here is how I did it.

In addition to the above info, whoever you order your wheels from are usually very helpful, especially since the Camaro with mini tubs is so popular.

TKO 600 RR
Dutchman 9" w/3.70 US Gear Lightning r&p

Hey Mike,
Everything that Patrick said with a couple of additions.
Be sure whatever wheels you like clear whatever calipers you like.
If you are swapping out your rear try to understand ahead of time your suspension mounting points relative to your brake mounting points.

I was in your shoes a little while ago. There isnít anywhere you can find dimensions you can guarantee will match up to your car especially if you intend to stuff the wheelwell.

I made a fixture to hold wheels apart and concentric.
I put an old pair of L60ís on cragars I had on the fixture and, on a pair of motorcycle jacks put them up in the wheel wells to see what could fit
Picked wheels, tires, rear, and brakes and got comfortable that it would work.
Got the wheels and tires
Put them on the fixture, on the jacks, centered them, and then measured the mounting distance.
Got the rear and brakes.
The tire setup centered really well. I did mess up a little by not realizing the panhard bar mount was gonna kiss the caliper setup pretty hard but that was an easy tweak.

I think the fixture was overkill and I could have gotten to the same place with some care. I think there are pics in my build thread though I havenít been too good at keeping that up.

67RSSS......owned since 69. A basket case for most of it.

#1 start with tire.

Axle width, backspace, offset will all depend on how much dish you want, brake clearance etc.

It all starts with tire size.
