biggest tires with 10 x 15 wheels on a stock 68

I have a 68 camaro with 8 x 15 wheels on the front . 10 x x15 on the rear .im currently running 295/50/15 on the rear . I have new z28 five leaf springs . the will never settle to the ride height that I want . 15 years and there at the same ride height. I going back to stock rear ride height with calvert racing split mono springs .I want to purchase the biggest tire possible to fill the wheel well out without fitment issues. i have been looking for this info on several forums with no luck. my car has not been mini tubed . springs will be in stock location .most of the info I have found is for 17 or 18 inch wheels . any info and pics would be greatly appreciated . I trust team Camaro more that I would a tire store . I don't want to buy a set of tires that don't look rite or not clear everything .thanks in advance .

That's a hard order to fill without having measurements.

I would guess your wheels now wouldn't clear IF the rear end was lowered ?

Where would they hit ? Outer lip, or somewhere inside ?

Re: biggest tires with 10 x 15 wheels on a stock 68

It comes down to the tire height and wheel offset. I made the mistake of not adjusting the offset when I went to 17x9 wheels. Lowering the car means I need wheels with a +20mm to +25mm offset. That should allow my 235/45R17 tires which are about stock height (25.3 inches) to fit without rubbing on the inside or hitting fender on the outside. In my case, I converted my suspension to a 4 link which gives me better clearance since I don't have to worry about the leaf springs. I haven't heard of anyone running 295s without modifying the tubs - they're 2 inches wider and 1.3 inches taller than mine....

A 275 is about the smallest width tire you could put on a 10" wide rim without it starting to look to narrow for the rim, but I doubt this will fit within a stock setup as well.
For example I just looked at the BF Goodrich 255/60 and the rim range is 7-9", the tread width is 8.5". This tire would look ballooned out at the rim in my opinion.

I'm running 275/60/15 on 8" wheels. About as big as you'll get in a stock wheel well at stock height. {Excludes + sizing}

You have 2" ? more wheel well depth, so I would "think" with the correct off-set 10's would fit fine.

Again, you need to measure or test fit.

thanks for the replys . I have the ballooned look now with the 295/50/15s. if I lower the rear now the wheel well lip will rub . the inside is close to the springs and inner tub but does not rub .

that's the look I want Doug G . wheel well full of tire with room for suspension travel. i understand the 17s and 18s will handle better and there are more tire choices. I like the look of 15s for some reason. thanks for posting the pic.

The ride is better with 15" ers as opposed to the 17 or 18's.

I'm not into corner carving, and IF they can run that fast in X275, plenty of tire for me and my slow ride

I'm still thinking you need to measure, as it sounds like you need less back spacing to get the wheel more under the car.

Make sure you don’t end up with a narrower rear track width than front. I can see it happening based on some of what I am reading here. First gens pretty much always use a +6mm offset to keep wheels centered in the wheel well.

A 10” wide wheel on a lowered 68 is a bad idea regardless of offset imho... And a 275 tire is about as narrow as you want to go on a 10” wheel unless you like the hella flush look.

You'll need to be careful of shock clearance at the lower mount as well, especially with tire roll.

Re: biggest tires with 10 x 15 wheels on a stock 68

I have been told that as a rule of thumb that your rims should be within 1/2 inch of your tread width. This gives you a flat tread and even wear. My 235s on 9 inch rims fit that bill as they have a 9.25" tread width. Using that rule, your 295s should be on 12 inch rims to give you a proper ride.
