Baer Brake Track 4 Wheel Clearance Issue

Hey Everyone,

I completed the install of my Baer Track 4 brakes on the front of my '67 and went to install the new wheel. The bottomed out on the caliper - DOH!

I have 18x8 U111 US Mag Rambler wheels on the front with the 4.75" backspace and 1mm offset but the problem is that the caliper sticks out .962" further than the hub mounting face. Baer has a template you can cut out to check your current wheel fitment but that would require ordering, returning and working the issue through trial and error.

So I am wondering if anyone else has worked through the hub height/caliper clearance issue. I have not found any manufacturer sites that show cross section diagrams and measurements and Baer was less than helpful. They actually suggested that I send the template to the wheel companies and expect them to measure their wheels. I can imagine how that would go over.

Suggestions?

Bill

Re: Baer Brake Track 4 Wheel Clearance Issue

That can happen with low cost cast one piece wheels. They need to have relatively thick cross sections for strength. You will likely have more success with two and three piece wheels. Those manufacturers will work with you on brake fitment.

I have used Z51 C6 brakes with 18” Vision Torque cast wheels with no problems. They are quite similar to the wheels you have.

How much is the interference? Will a small spacer move it out enough?

Not to tread hijack but there is another ongoing thread discussing US Mag Rambler wheel stating they only come with 4.50 backspace?

a .250" shim would barely clear but that would kill my fender clearance, require new wheel studs (not a big deal) and I am just not generally crazy about wheel shims.

Re: Baer Brake Track 4 Wheel Clearance Issue

You state the caliper sticks out .962”. That almost an inch. Maybe it’s .0962? Just under a 10th.

A 1/4” spacer would work. You don’t have to change the studs as you can use extended thread lug nuts. 1/4 spacer should not cause any concern imho.

As Don has suggested on other threads run a little neg camber to minimize the rubbing.

Only other options are either different wheels or different brakes.

Re: Baer Brake Track 4 Wheel Clearance Issue

If you have to use a small spacer, a hubcentric one is best rather that a flat universal one.

These BMW ones work with our 5 x 120.6 bolt pattern but check to make sure it fits with the rim.
Just watch out for the hubcentric ones that have a chamfer, sometimes the chamfer doesn't match the rim's center chamfer.

Rocket has some nice wheels with a variety of backspacing.

Nope .962". This is the Baer Track 4 system and the caliper is HUGE!

So would a 1/4” spacer give you enough clearance for the calipers?

Re: Baer Brake Track 4 Wheel Clearance Issue

The wheel is cut for caliper clearance but the Baer stuff is a bit larger. When you see Wilwood advertise ‘narrow’, this is what their taking about. .962” is measured from the rotor/wheel flange to the height (outward) of the caliper where it would make contact with the wheel.

His wheel has some clearance but need another .250” to fully get the wheel out of the way. When you order custom wheels they’ll ask who’s brake system you’re running for this exact reason.

Not sure how much meat those wheels have but you may be able to machine some clearance into them.

This is a good reply - thanks.

Actually Baer was posting pictures of the Track 4 on instagram and I commented about my problems and they offered to help. Would have like to have gotten help when I called and emailed previously but I guess social media has proven useful for once. Once I get wheels that work I will post it to close the loop on this thread for future searches.

That's what their website states and a local dealer told me when I was looking at them. Maybe that info was incorrect?

Re: Baer Brake Track 4 Wheel Clearance Issue

Closing the loop -

I ordered a Ridler 650 wheel. They state that it works with big brakes and the spokes are rather curved so it looked like it would have more clearance...

Success!!!

Plenty of room and they look really good. So if you have these brakes, I got a Ridler 650 18x8 wheel and there is about 5mm clearance.
