Better backspacing for 17s 4.75" or 5"?

Question for the guys that are running 17" wheels. I plan to run 17x8 wheels on all 4 corners. Do you recommend 4.75" or 5" backspacing all the way around?

My suspension is new but stock. I have a front disc conversion kit on the front. I plan to run 235/45/17 on the front and 255/45/17 on the back. Of course I am open to running a 245/45/17 on the front if I won't experience any rubbing.

I have searched through the forums and have heard of people running both 4.75" and 5" backspacing, I just wanted to get some feedback on what works.

Thanks!!

When I ran 17's, I used 4.75" of BS with a 245/45. It only rubbed the frame at full lock. It wasn't extreme by any means, but it did rub slightly. If I were to do it again, I'd run the same setup.

Do you think running 245/45/17 with the 5" b/s would solve the rubbing issue or am I thinking about it backwards?

I have a 69 Camaro w/ a SBC and I am running 235/45/17s on a 17x8 with 4 7/8" BS on front and 275/40/17s on a 17x9.5 with 5.5" BS. I have all new Hotchkis/GW suspension components which lower the front 2" and the rear 1.5". I have no rubbing at all while driving, but the passenger side front wheel will hit the frame rail at full lock when turning right (while parked). 245/45/17s would fit on the front of my car no problem.

If there isn't a huge price difference I would go with the larger 5" BS as you could always add a spacer if needed.

Sounds Great!! You know I wanted to go with the 17x9.5 like yours but I had read on some of these forums that you needed to roll the fender lip. If that is NOT true I would rather run those. Since my suspension is stock, shouldn't I have more room to play with on the rear?

My fender lips were rolled by the previous owner, sorry forgot to mention that since I bought it that way.

With stock suspension and the low profile 17s the distance between top of tire and wheelwell will be excessive and won't look right w/o some lowering IMHO
