Re: 285/40/17 on rear of 68?

there was a thread earlier this week of almost the same question, i recomend a search

and if the tires are olny 3/8" wider, why dont you just see if you have 3/8" of room to spare, and double check and compair the back spacing?

and sorry i dont really have an answer, but for most cars 275 is the widest

I don't have an answer either but it sounds like time for a fender lip roll to me. If the car is lowered I doubt it.

Re: 285/40/17 on rear of 68?

Here's an article on a 68 Firebird with those size rear tires on 17x9 rims with 6.5" backspacing. He's running a road race suspension set-up, so body lean is minimal. Not a Camaro, but PDC.

I think that I could have fit a 295/45-17 on about 17" x 9", w/ 5.5 b/s on my car?

The bottom of the shock which gave my old L-60's, (a measured 298/53-14), on 14" x 9", w/3.5" b/s Fenton Slotted Mag rims fits would fit inside the 17's for more clearance.

I had to raise my car about 4" to 4.5" using coli-overs to fit them, but I still had almost 1.5" inside at the bulge if not for the shock bottoms hitting.

Re: 285/40/17 on rear of 68?

I have 285/60/15's on my 68 with slight rub on hard turns and off camber (like turning into a driveway). Stock wheel wells and lip not rolled.

I would cut a cardboard template and check fit first.

Question Re: 285/40/17 on rear of 68?

Doug G,

You didn't mention rim widths and back spacing?

And if you had to raise it some either?

Please come back with more info.

Thanks,

pdq67

Mono springs (original)
15x8 weld prostars,4.5" bs
stock height (plus old springs might be lower/worn)

ie: tight fit.

edit : I forgot to mention they're 285 SH (shorts) 27.4T x 11.7W so they claim.

Thumbs down Re: 285/40/17 on rear of 68?

Sorry, but I feel that an 8" rim is TOO narrow for a true 295 section tire!!

My L-60's at 298 bulge quite a bit on my 9" rims!
