15 X 7....or 15 X 8

I have a stock 67 camaro, I thinking of purchasing some cragar S/S wheels. But should I go with the 15 x 7's or 15 x 8's? Im leaning more towards the 15 x 8, and if so, what tires does anyone suggest? Thanks

Re: 15 X 7....or 15 X 8

I just installed a set of 8 inch AR rims with 4.75 backspace on them and the tires outside edge is almost even with the outside of the of the fender it does not tuck inside the fender like I thought it would I got my info before ordering from a guy that put them on a 69 and they looked like I wanted mine to look but I guess the 69 has a little bit more fender room. If I can get them to let me return them I will get a 5.5 backspace or a 7 inch with 4.75 back space.

Fred,

Was that the front tires you are talking about being even with the outside of the fender?

Ya know, they make the Cragar SS in modern sizes now... You could have the best of both worlds. Mine are 16x7, 3 7/8 bs w/225-45 in front, 17x8, 4.5 bs, 255-45 in back. The modern low profile rubber makes a huge difference in handling and feel, and with the Classic Crager look, it takes more than a glance to tell they're not ordinay old 15's.

Jim, Is your front end dropped at all? I am looking into cragar 16's, but with a dropped front end I am concerened I will need a little more backspacing...

I have the 15x7's 215/60R/15 on the front with the front end 2" lower from stock and 15x8's 225/60R/15 which are going to be switched to 255/60/R15 on the rear. If you are concerned about rubbing on the front tie rods, go with the 15x7's in the front to be safe.

AZ, if I'm dropped, it's not "on purpose", the springs are supposedly factory repro, but it is much lower than stock. the fender lips are 23.5" off the ground.

What is the backspacing on these rims? I measured from where the back side of the rim will sit against the rotor, to the tie rod end is 5"...

TT2's standard backspacing is 4" for a 17" rim. Cragar 17" rim is 3-1/2" for the standard backspacing. Will I need to get a custom made rim for the dropped front?

Re: 15 X 7....or 15 X 8

All rims are different and the offsets vary. I have Rally rims with an offset of 4.5" which clear the outer tie rods by at least 3 inches or more. So if you measured correctly ( wheel hub to edge of rim) and have a 3.5 offset on your 17" Cragar rim, I would say you will have plenty of room from side to side. Are you going to use a low profile tire such as a 50 or 40 series? Since you will have a 17'' rim, it might not clear the top of the wheel well. Maybe someone else could chime in with some suggestions about the 17'' rims on the front. I'm not sure a 17'' rim would work on the front, especially since it is lowered 2''.

Re: 15 X 7....or 15 X 8

i was talking to a guy on another forum who had 7" wide rims with 3.5" BS on his 67 with QA1 adjustables
he had to raise the car about 2" above stock ride height

so i believe you should look at 4.75-5" of back spacing for a 8" rim or 4-4.5" BS for a 7" wide rim
and for disc brakes take about .25" off the BS numbers

but these may not be right, so you should take some measurements and find out exactly what you need
or do a bunch of searches and see what most people are using
