17" vs 18" question/debate...

I'm sure it's been discussed before, but here goes anyway. My '69 currently has some low budget 18's now, and as part of my resto, I will be putting on some new Billet Specialties wheels. I like the look of bigger wheels, but I'm not sure if 18's actually do look better the the 17's I've seen posted on this forum.

Re: 17" vs 18" question/debate...

I went thru this same debate, but settled on the 17's. I went with 9.5" rears & 8" fronts. The 18's looked weird from certain angles to me. The just looked tall & skinny. I also thought the 17's would give a little better ride with the slightly taller tire sidewall. The only 18's that really looked better to me than 17's were ones that were 9" front & 10.5 or 11" rear. These obviously require more mods like mini tub & front suspension components. All the added cost drove me away from the 18's. Just my take, but whatver you like is what you should go with

I like 17s. Anything bigger doesn't have enough sidewall for me - visually or to handle our bumpy streets effectively. Just my $.02

Re: 17" vs 18" question/debate...

Definitely go 17", check out my sig for pictures of my 9.5 width rears and 8 width fronts, all 17", I feelthey visually look better than 18s, plus they cost less for the rims and tires!! I feel the proportions are just right for 17s on our camaros, of course my opinion....

Re: 17" vs 18" question/debate...

Kumho ECSTA SPT (TireRack)
235/45WR17 - $79
275/40WR17 - $107

Rims: $985 shipped w/lugnuts/valve stems - Karen 1-800 - 731-4870
Front: 17x8 (4.75" bs) - 5x4.75 pattern (American Racing 505-7863)
Back: 17x9.5 (5.5bs) - 5x4.75 pattern (American Racing TT2 custom)

This info was provided to me when I saw Brians sweet 69 camaro by him.
I also have a 69 soon to recieve a new pair of boots. The shipping on the wheels may vary and the custom rears were $40 - $50 more per wheel. Just give the 800 number a call and ask for Karen for exact pricing to your location.

Re: 17" vs 18" question/debate...

If I ever upgrade next time I will buy 18s, I bought 17s. 18s fill out the wheelwell much better. With the right BS you can run 245/45/17s up front and 275/40/17s in the rear

Re: 17" vs 18" question/debate...

Backspacing above is correct for 69 only
$985 price was what I got from Karen at that 800 #, they have those sizes IN STOCK so I didn't have to wait for the custom 9.5" backspace rims!! $985 included the custom sizes + shipping + valve stems + lugnuts. Paid DiscountTire $65 total to mount/balance all 4 tires. Wold my old rims/tires using CraigsList for $400, making it about $1100 for the total upgrade from 15 to 17!
17" with those size tires fill out the wheel wells perfectly as shown in my signature on my site.

Re: 17" vs 18" question/debate...

How is the backspacing any different between a 69 and the other first genteration's? I will soon be buying 17's for the 67.

Re: 17" vs 18" question/debate...

On a 67 you have a slightly narrower rear wheel well, so you are best off going with a 255/45R17 tire on the rear. Same backspacing is fine for a 9.5" wide rim.

Re: 17" vs 18" question/debate...

Luke I do recommend you get 8" on the rear though for a 67, with that 255 tire size the 9.5" rim will stick out, looking funny! So go 17x8 (4.75" bs) - 5x4.75 pattern all around, cost will be probably about $50-$90 less because you won't need the custom 9.5" size

Re: 17" vs 18" question/debate...

I think the 18's looks much better than the 17's. 17's look like 15's to me now. The 18's put the top of the wheel much closer to the quarter lip and looks better. I plan to go with 18x10's with 275/40/18's with 5.75" bs. This will require cut or rolled lips and "massaged" in wheel wells. But the end result is worth it.
